The Nacra 17 class has recognised notable performances from junior and rookie teams in 2025 as the season concludes. Brin Liddell and Rhiannan Brown have been named the Nacra 17 Junior Team of the Year 2025, achieving a fourth-place finish at the World Championships held in Sardinia, a significant improvement from their previous World Championship placements of 20th, 19th, and 18th.
Competing under various conditions at the World Championships, Liddell and Brown demonstrated consistent racing at the front of the fleet, highlighting their capability and commitment. At the end of the championship, they expressed pride in their achievement, noting, “That’s our best result at a Worlds. We’ve gone from 20th, then 19th and 18th, and now to fourth. It’s a pretty clear progression, and hopefully we can keep building from here.”
Their journey reflects hard work post-Olympics, where many teams opted for a break. Rather than stepping back, the Australian duo focused intently on improving their skills and building consistency by spending more hours on the water. Liddell remarked, “We didn’t really take our foot off the pedal after the Olympics… we’ve probably done more hours on the water than most of the other returning combinations, and that’s made a big difference this year.”
Liddell acknowledged the collective success of the Australian squad with other teams achieving personal bests, stating, “A big shout out to the other two Aussie teams as well — Archie and Sarah, and Jake and Niamh. Both had their best Worlds so far, which shows the depth we’re building.”
In addition to the junior team accolade, Federico Figlia Di Granara and Caterina Sedmak from Italy have been awarded Nacra 17 Rookie Team of the Year 2025. Since joining the class in 2025, they have made remarkable progress. Their debut regattas included the 2025 European Championship and the World Championship, where they finished 12th overall, winning bronze in the Under 24 Junior World Championship and the Junior European Championship, showcasing their prowess in competitive sailing.
This year’s achievements signal a promising future as new and young teams demonstrate their talents, laying a strong foundation for upcoming Olympic cycles in the Nacra 17 class.
