Summer arrived on the beautiful Northwest Coast of Tasmania just in time for the 58th International Mirror Class National Championship which was held at Wynyard Yacht Club from 3 – 7 January 2026 on the waters of Bass Strait. Ten races were sailed over four days of racing and 24 boats competed representing Tasmania, Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia and Western Australia. The entire Regatta was sailed in sparkling conditions under blue skies – the rain kindly stayed away until just after the end of the final dinner on Wednesday evening!
Races were sailed in breezes ranging from a building sea breeze on day 1 to robust 15 – 25 knot west/north westerlies on days 2 and 3 and a very light north westerly on day 4 which ensured that the skills of all competitors were tested over a wide range of conditions during the Regatta.
The new National Mirror Class Champions are Damian Carey (Henley Sailing Club SA) and Hayley Roberts (Connells Point Sailing Club NSW) sailing “Bob”. Damian and Hayley were consistently fast throughout the four days of racing and finished the Regatta with six firsts and three seconds. Second overall (and the Ladies National Championship) was won by Jessie Andrewartha and Michael Hughes from Wynyard Yacht Club sailing “Foxy Lady 3” and third overall was won by Guy and Lauchlan Naylor (Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club WA) sailing “The Yenda Lee” who also won the parent and child trophy. The youth (under 19) trophy was won by Jade Dickinson and India Williams (Kingston Beach Sailing Club TAS) in “Carpe Diem” and the Junior (under 16) trophy was won by Grady Frith and Amy Lee (Port Dalrymple Yacht Club, TAS) sailing “Lady in Red”.
Many thanks Wynyard Yacht Club for hosting a fantastic Regatta and all the volunteers who made the event possible. The next Mirror Nationals will be held at Mordialloc Sailing Club, Victoria from 16 – 20 January 2027.
