** With 8 Australian entries to the 29er Worlds, there will be plenty of local interest. Good luck to the squad **
The 2026 29er World Championship is officially underway at the Kiel-Schilksee Olympic Sailing Center, with the opening ceremony scheduled for tomorrow evening. Sailors from around the world have been arriving today, Thursday 2nd July, for registration and measurement, making the venue lively with anticipation.
The Championship will officially commence tomorrow evening, Friday 3rd July, with the Opening Ceremony following the Competitors’ Briefing at 1800. Participants are already engaged in various activities, with registration and boat inspections taking place throughout the day.
Today, the Race Office and Registration & Measurement were open from 0900 to 1800, allowing teams to check in and prepare their boats. A sustainability talk hosted by Chloe Goodman of Sailors for the Sea highlighted the importance of environmental initiatives in sailing. Sailors participating in the talk have the opportunity to win prizes in a sustainability raffle, emphasizing the commitment to protecting the waters.
This evening, a Kidzink Workshop is scheduled at 18:00, where young sailors will team up to tackle the challenge of designing a solution to harmful algae blooms. Winners will receive free entry to the Kidzink Pearl Cup in Dubai 2026, along with accommodation and a goody bag. Participation is limited, and registration is subject to availability.
The provisional racing schedule is set, with up to four races per fleet potentially taking place each day, culminating in a total of up to 18 races during the Championship, pending weather conditions.
In addition to racing, the event features a week full of activities and workshops aimed at engaging sailors and their families. Workshops, talks, and social events are planned throughout the week, ensuring that everyone stays entertained.
The defending champions from last year’s event are not all returning, leaving opportunities for new teams to shine. Notably, last year’s top three in the Open category will not be competing, while some familiar faces return in the Women’s and Mixed categories.
