Inaugural SB20 Tasmanian Schools Championship in Hobart

Sixty sailors and 15 boats will compete in the inaugural SB20 Tasmanian Schools Championship hosted by the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania (RYCT) in Hobart this Saturday. The event features 14 local crews and one interstate entry, establishing what is expected to be a significant addition to the annual SB20 Australian sailing calendar, particularly leading up to the 2029 SB20 World Championship in Hobart.

The Fahan School and The Hutchins School will have two and four teams on the water respectively, while The Friends’ School is entering three teams. St Virgil’s College will also compete after a break from sailing.

New entries include Kingston High School, St Mary’s College with two entries, and a combined team from Woodbridge High School/Hobart College. A team from Scots College will fly in from Sydney to compete, adding to the excitement of the event.

The SB20 Association of Australia, in partnership with RYCT and the Derwent Sailing Squadron, aims to promote youth sailing and build interest in the SB20 class, paving the way for the upcoming world championship.

SB20 Association of Australia Class President, Paul McCartney, expressed enthusiasm for the new Schools event, highlighting its potential to enhance participation in the SB20 class. McCartney stated, “Introducing enthusiastic youth sailors to sportsboat sailing, and to the SB20 in particular, is an important avenue for us to build the SB20 Class here in Australia.”

The event will consist of up to eight short windward/leeward races starting at 10:15 AM, with participants allowed one adult onboard, and a maximum of four crew members total. The initiative has been supported by local SB20 owners who have provided boats for schools without their own.
