ILCA 6 Masters World Champs – Day 4

Pattaya, Thailand – Racing resumed today at the 2023 ILCA 6 Masters World Championships, hosted by the Royal Varuna Yacht Club, after a well-deserved rest day for the sailors. Two races were completed in about 6–10 knots of breeze and clear blue skies over the Gulf of Thailand.

Apprentice Master Carla Canturri from Andorra shared, “It was quite choppy, and with the wind strengthening through the day, it was getting a bit more difficult, but it was very enjoyable, nice, and sunny.”

Lithuania’s Tokyo Olympian Viktorija Andrulyte remains atop the leaderboard in the Apprentice division after two more first-place finishes today. Similarly, Great Britain’s Jon Emmett finished first in both Masters races once again, continuing his undefeated streak of firsts at this event. The largest division of the championship is the Grand Masters fleet, which is still led by Canadian Allan Clark who has an 11-point lead (as does Emmett). In the Great Grand Masters fleet, Australian Stephen Gunther is only one point ahead of fellow countryman Jeff Loosemore, which will make for exciting racing in the final two days. American Bill Symes also won both of today’s races, giving him a 12-point lead in the Legends fleet.

In recognition of Valentine’s Day today, there was a presentation of roses to the partners of the sailors and event staff. Two races are scheduled for tomorrow, February 15, and rain and light winds are forecasted.
