Great Britain and Spain continue domination of 49erFX Cascais Championship

Charlotte Dobson/Sakia Tidey (GBR) continue to lead the 49erFX Championship in Cascais, although their lead decreased on the top five, after scoring 7-12-3 results today. In second place is Tamara Echegoyen/Paula Barcelo (ESP), who after a finishing the day with 5-5-2, consolidated second place and are just two points from the top of the podium.

Closing the podium, with another successful day and eight points off the lead, are Martine Grael/Kahena Kunze (BRA) after completing the day with a solid performance of 4-1-4. The top places are starting to take shape, but there are still three races to go ahead of the double points Medal Race.

After the rest day, the 49erFX women’s Olympic class fleet returned to sea in Cascais. With the first warning signal scheduled for 12:00pm, competitors had to wait ashore for the wind to settle in Cascais to start their third day of racing.

With the wind from the north-west quadrant and blowing around 14 knots around 12:30, the organization gave the green light for the start of the day and the competitors put their boats afloat shortly after to start the races at 1:20pm.

The organisation has chosen to advance the schedule. The Race Committee decided to complete three races on Friday morning and the Medal Race that afternoon. The decision to advance the Medal Race was based on a weather forecast of exceptionally light airs for Saturday, which would jeopardise the running of this important race.

This Championship is supported by Turismo de Portugal, Visit Cascais, Cascais Municipality, Portuguese Sailing Federation, Cascais Marina and Vista Alegre. We also have the institutional support of the non-governmental association Sailors For The Sea – Portugal
