Under the Coureaux de Groix, nine Class40 crews have embarked on the prologue of the 2nd edition of the GLOBE40. This event follows a prolonged period in Lorient, where adverse weather conditions mirrored the challenges typically faced at the start of winter transatlantic races. On September 4, the sailors commenced their 900-mile journey to Cadiz, which will contribute to the rankings for this edition.
During launch week in Lorient, emotions ran high as crews prepared for their long-anticipated round-the-world race. However, caution was paramount for skippers and organisers due to the severe wind and sea conditions experienced in the Bay of Biscay. The reality of climate change has become evident, with two hurricanes impacting European shores just last month.
The week in Lorient, extended to ten days, allowed crews to connect after years of preparation. Organisers conducted various technical checks and briefings to ensure a rigorous adherence to technical and regulatory standards. The local expertise offered by the “sailing valley” proved invaluable, and the Lorient Metropolitan Area, under President Fabrice Loher, provided an excellent environment for the competitors to gear up for the race.
The prologue route will take participants across the Gulf of Cascoña, around Cape Finisterre, down the Spanish and Portuguese coasts, past Cape St. Vincent, and into the Bay of Cadiz. This journey will not be straightforward, as vital points can be gained or lost along the way; the close results of the inaugural edition serve as a reminder, with only two points separating the top competitors.
Cadiz is set to welcome the sailors on the evening of September 8, likely extending into the night of the 8th to 9th. This marks a significant milestone for the city as it hosts its first major ocean racing event, with an innovative venue established on a 300-metre quay at the Astilleros dock, close to the city centre. A robust entertainment programme aims to transform the occasion into a vibrant public event, reflective of the French ocean racing tradition. As the oldest city in Western Europe, Cadiz is expected to offer its famed Andalusian hospitality amid its narrow streets and historic landmarks.
