On Monday at 16:25, the CREDIT MUTUEL Class40 crossed the finish line in the prologue GLOBE40 in Cadiz. After waiting a few days in Lorient, the winners covered the course in 4 days 2 hours and 25 minutes, achieving an average speed of 8.80 knots over the theoretical distance and 10.03 knots based on the actual distance travelled. The race was challenging, with a short but violent front to navigate at Cape Finisterre and strong competition from three other “scow” Class40s. The young German team from NEXT GENERATION BOATING AROUND THE WORLD and the BELGIUM OCEAN RACING-CURIUM team completed the podium by posing a significant threat right until the finish line. Meanwhile, the “sharp” Class40s engaged in an intense battle, with five competitors separated by mere miles after four days of racing.
The female crew of ENGIE – Dessine-moi la Hight Tech, led by Aina Bauza and Axelle Pillain, also performed admirably, competing closely with their two direct rivals before falling slightly behind towards the end of the race. The cause of their drop in performance remains to be determined.
Throughout the evening, the groups of sharper Class40s maintained a gap of approximately thirty miles with the scows until a transition to a downwind phase with stronger winds allowed the latest generation boats to extend their lead significantly.
The prologue of the GLOBE40 served as an excellent warm-up, providing a competitive environment without placing excessive risk on teams who have been preparing for months. It’s important to note that this year, the prologue has a coefficient of 0.5, while stage 1 to Cape Verde has a coefficient of 1 and the longest stage from Cape Verde to Reunion has a coefficient of 3.
