Day 4 of Geographe Bay Race Week commenced with competitors reassembling at Geographe Marina after a lay day spent enjoying the Margaret River region. Competitors were greeted by light easterly winds of 2-3 knots, setting the stage for a warm and potentially slow day on the water.
As the race committee prepared for the day, a familiar figure, renowned regatta maestro Ron Jensen, joined the officials and confirmed a north-westerly breeze was developing. With his expertise, a mile-long windward-leeward course was quickly established, allowing all four divisions to start racing in a gentle breeze of 5-8 knots.
However, not long into the race, rising temperatures led to the emergence of an early seabreeze, resulting in variable conditions. A shortened course flag was raised to ease some of the chaos as Division 1 finished confidently, while Division 4 experienced challenges but managed to cross the finish line before midday.
During a well-deserved lunch break, the anticipated ‘Cape Westerly’ breeze began building, promising an exciting afternoon of racing. After 1 pm, crews lined up for a passage race that took them from the Jetty towards Dunsborough, making a graceful run back to the clubhouse mark before navigating through a series of scenic coastal marks back to the finish.
All fleets finished successfully, assisted by the seabreeze that arrived right on schedule at 4 pm, marking the day as a triumph for the competitors. The final day of Race Week promises one last passage race and a presentation lunch at the Geographe Bay Yacht Club.
