IMA Maxi European Championship – Opening offshore race

The Maxi One and Maxi Grand Prix classes concluded the Regata dei Tre Golfi, the opening offshore race of the IMA Maxi European Championship. Following the initial part for smaller handicap boats on 8 May, 27 maxis and one maxi multihull set sail from Naples’ Porticciolo di Santa Lucia marina on 22 May.

Organised by the Circolo del Remo e della Vela Italia in conjunction with the International Maxi Association, the event enjoyed strong winds up to 18 knots. The race featured intense competition, with many crews experiencing multiple lead changes. In the Maxi 1 class, the Lizz Flowers-steered Galateia secured victory, crossing the finish line just 3 minutes and 37 seconds ahead of Karel Komárek’s V. Sir Peter Ogden’s Jethou finished closely alongside Peter Dubens’ North Star, with Peter Harrison’s Jolt not far behind.

Galateia’s navigator Simon Fisher noted the challenging race conditions, with numerous opportunities for boats to catch up due to varying wind conditions. The competition was fierce, with lead changes occurring frequently, especially in the upwind segments of the race. At one point, Galateia struggled with wind shifts near Capri, which Fisher described as a difficult but ultimately rewarding experience.

V’s tactician Ken Read highlighted the race’s unpredictability, noting moments of beautiful sailing contrasted with periods of frustration as boats encountered wind holes. Despite a brief setback with hydraulic issues, V remained competitive.

Ultimately, Galateia also won on corrected time, followed by V and Leopard 3.

In the Maxi Grand Prix classes, tight racing ensued among former Maxi 72s, with North Star emerging victorious on corrected time, ahead of Jolt and Django 7X. North Star’s tactician, Nick Rogers, credited the crew’s navigation skills, especially in managing the tricky conditions off Capri.

As of now, the results for Maxi 3 and 4/5 classes are yet to be determined. A layday is scheduled before inshore/coastal racing resumes from 25 to 28 May out of Sorrento.
