Australia’s next generation of sailing talent has excelled at the ILCA Under 21 World Championships, with Isaac Schotte winning silver and Frances Beebee securing bronze. Teammates Eddie Reid and Evie Saunders also performed admirably, finishing fourth in the ILCA7 and fifth in the ILCA6, respectively.
At the event in Dun Laoghaire, Ireland, Australian Sailing High Performance Pathways Manager Haylee Outteridge supported the young squad during six days of intense racing. Outteridge noted the regatta featured mostly moderate winds, with onshore breezes and short chop on the first two days, before transitioning to offshore winds. Strong currents in Dublin Bay significantly influenced the racing, particularly at the start line, requiring physical endurance and disciplined race-day processes.
The Australian Sailing Futures program benefited from the coaching of double Olympic gold medallist Matt Wearn for the ILCA7 men, while ILCA6 National Squad Coach Mikael Lundh guided the women. Outteridge highlighted the positive impact of having experienced coaches like Wearn and Lundh working with the Performance Pathways athletes, stating that Wearn’s professionalism reinforced the values and commitment of the Australian Sailing Team.
Outteridge also reflected on the significance of the athletes’ performances, which are the culmination of years of dedicated training with their coaches. While athletes experienced mixed emotions due to missed opportunities on the racecourse, they displayed a solid foundation of skills and speed and expressed determination to improve and close the gap with the senior fleet.
With a renewed sense of purpose, the Australian team leaves Ireland confident and focused on their future training, with the lessons learned at the U21 Worlds propelling them towards the upcoming home Olympic Games in Brisbane 2032.
