Entries have opened for the 2025 Nautilus Marine Insurance Sydney Short Ocean Racing Championship (SSORC), attracting both regular participants and newcomers. Scheduled for 29 and 30 November, this 48th edition hosted by the Middle Harbour Yacht Club (MHYC) will feature a blend of passage and windward/leeward courses, providing a comprehensive challenge for all crews.
In addition to the usual Division 1 and 2 entrants, a small fleet of TP52 yachts is also anticipated. The event will kick off with an ocean passage race on Saturday, followed by the fast-paced windward/leeward races on Sunday, all starting and finishing at Watsons Bay.
The races will contribute to the MHYC Ocean Pointscore Series, with Saturday’s race also part of the CYCA Summer Short Offshore Series. Entry into the SSORC is free for participants in these series, provided they register online and meet the Notice of Race (NoR) requirements.
Defending champion Bob Cox, who has won Division 1 for the past four years with his DK46, Nine Dragons, is expected to compete again. Neil Padden, skipper of the Beneteau 40.7 Wailea, also plans to return, noting the enjoyable mix of racing formats and the regatta’s well-organised nature.
Other entrants include MHYC Commodore Rob Aldis with his Mylius 50 Daguet 2 and Ian Box with his XP44 Toy Box 2, both of whom are committed to participating in Division 1. Box emphasised the importance of maintaining the event’s historical significance and competitive spirit, highlighting the level of competition and the challenge of the racing format.
Traditionally, the SSORC serves as a preparatory event for yachts gearing up for the Rolex Sydney Hobart and is known for its challenging courses off Sydney’s Heads. The event also includes the Seven Islands Race for those seeking variety, featuring a pursuit style start.
Standard entries for the SSORC close on Friday, 21 November, with late entries accepted until 5pm on Wednesday, 26 November. For entry details and the Notice of Race, please visit: www.ssorc.mhyc.com.au.
