Decisions and breakages decide Day 3 of 12ft Skiff Interdominion

During Day 3 of the triSearch 12ft Skiff Interdominion Championship on Sydney Harbour, two races were conducted under challenging conditions. A general recall marked the start of the day, and one race had to be abandoned and subsequently re-sailed due to shifting winds that plagued the competitors.

Nick Press and Andrew Hay from Sail Inc., NSW, showcased their dominance by adding a win and a third to their earlier results, giving them a six-point lead against their closest rivals, Brett Hobson and Peter Nicholson of Geotherm, NSW, and Brad Phillips with Oscar Wilson of Terms & Conditions, NSW.

Press described the intense competition, stating that his team and Terms & Conditions were continuously vying for the lead, with both teams trading positions throughout the day. Geotherm also made significant contributions to the competition, ending the day with solid results.

In the re-started race, C-Tech from New Zealand clinched victory, with Glenn Armstrong and Roger Barnes’ As Good As It Gets finishing fifth. C-Tech’s Alex Vallings reflected on the frustrations of the day but noted their ability to regain momentum in the second race.

Despite early successes, Sydney Sailmakers faced a tough day with four capsizes affecting their results, with Josh Tasker expressing disappointment over their performance, now trailing significantly behind the leaders.

Meanwhile, other teams experienced mechanical issues contributing to the day’s challenges. The crew from The Darkside had a rig snap but managed to compete in the second race. Arrogant Frog dealt with a broken stay but persevered to finish the race despite their difficulties.

Tomorrow’s layday will provide a necessary reprieve after a physically taxing day on the water, and the competition continues on Thursday with two races scheduled from 2 pm. This year’s championship is hosted by the Australian 18 Footers League at Double Bay and will conclude with the final event on 10 January.

The Interdominion, celebrated since 1957, epitomizes the rivalry between Australia and New Zealand for the Silasec Trophy, with triSearch as the naming rights sponsor. Full results and information regarding the 12ft Skiff class can be found on their official website.

Spectators are invited to view the annual event, which is held alternately in Australia and New Zealand. There will be a Spectator Ferry on 10 January, departing from the Double Bay Wharf at 1.30pm, so bring your friends and family along to be a part of the action. Ferry tickets at:
