ontender Sailcloth's new range of MAXIKOTE Polyester Spinnaker cloth has proven its ability to withstand the toughest conditions in the world – and help win the Volvo Ocean Race.
Race winner ERICSSON 4 exclusively used Contender's MAXIKOTE Polyester Spinnaker cloth as part of her downwind sail inventory. MAXIKOTE Spinnaker cloth is specifically engineered to handle the loads generated by the high apparent wind angles when the Volvo Open 70s sail downwind, and to be rugged enough to survive the most demanding sailing environment anywhere.
Headquartered in the Netherlands, Contender Sailcloth is delighted that its new MAXIKOTE Polyester Spinnaker fabrics passed the nine month, 39,000-mile race without any failure. Race winner ERICSSON 4 used part of the MAXIKOTE inventory for the entire race.
“This is the best endorsement we can ask for,” says Roeland Wentholt, Sales Director of Contender BV. “To have our fabrics used not only the winning boat, but extensively throughout the fleet, shows the universal regard in which our spinnaker cloth is held.”
For ultimate performance, stability, and durability, MAXIKOTE and SUPERKOTE spinnaker fabrics are coated with Contender's proprietary polyurethane chemistry. This “Kote” maintains low weight, while also providing zero porosity and high water repellency and is so durable that even the extreme conditions of this race did not wear out the MAXIKOTE spinnakers.
Contender Sailcloth was formed in Holland in 1986 and is dedicated to supplying sailmakers and covermakers with the best available fabrics. Contender offices are run by sailors who actively participate in the sport at all levels from One-Design to Grand Prix racing to Cruising.
As a converter, Contender works with yarn suppliers, weavers and finishers in Europe and North America. The result is a range of fabrics renowned for quality and performance.
