Cayard holds narrow lead into final-day showdown at the 99th Bacardi Cup

MIAMI (March 6, 2026) — The 99th Bacardi Cup is headed for a final-day showdown. Just two teams are left in contention for the title: Paul Cayard / Frithjof Kleen and Robert Scheidt / Austin Sperry.

Five-time Olympic medalist Scheidt won Race Five on Friday, narrowing the lead of Cayard and Kleen to just three points and tightening the battle for one of sailing’s most historic trophies.

Cayard holds the advantage. Despite both skippers never having won the Bacardi Cup, they are seasoned competitors. The mathematics are simple: only Cayard/Kleen or Scheidt/Sperry can win the 99th Bacardi Cup.

Cayard, confident after opening the regatta with three straight wins, mentioned, “Obviously we have a little advantage on Robert. We’re confident. We have good speed.” He noted that Scheidt needs to beat him by three or four places to take the title, making strategy critical.

Scheidt controlled the race from the start with a consistent performance, which included back-to-back wins. He emphasised the importance of a strong start in the final race, stating, “The first cross will be very decisive.”

Behind them, a battle is unfolding for the final podium spot. Mateusz Kusznierewicz and Bruno Prada (POL) sit third overall with 12 points, while Diego Negri and Sergio Lambertenghi (ITA) are close behind with 15. With both teams in contention, their rivalry heightens the stakes going into the final race.

With Cayard holding a narrow lead and Scheidt within striking distance, the regatta is set for a decisive finish between these two accomplished sailors.
