Boating enthusiast and recent graduate apprentice shipwright Tom Ironside of Mac Marine Group, Newport, NSW, clinched the 2025 BIA Apprentice of the Year award during the official opening of the Sydney Boat Show. BIA President Adam Smith commended Tom for his dedication to continual learning, as he has already embarked on a second trade qualification in Engineering after completing his Marine Craft Construction apprenticeship at just 22 years old.
The 2025 BIA Apprentice of the Year awards featured over 35 nominees from various member businesses, including boatbuilders and marine dealers. The shortlist was narrowed down through a rigorous interview process, showcasing three State winners and several commendations.
Smith noted, “The calibre and enthusiasm of our industry apprentices was wonderful to witness during the judging process. Congratulations to all who entered, and we wish them the best in their careers in the boating industry.” The State winners for 2025 are:
- NSW: Tom Ironside, Shipwright apprentice at Mac Marine Group
- Queensland: Patrick Bognar, Marine Mechanical apprentice at JSW Powersports
- SA: Will Newman, Marine Mechanical apprentice at Elite Ski Boats
Tom received a trophy, certificate, and a $1000 Repco voucher for tools. Additionally, he will be sponsored to attend the 2026 Auckland Boat Show, including flights and accommodations for two. State winners were awarded trophies, certificates, and $500 Repco vouchers.
Highly Commended nominations went to:
- Joel Morgan, McKenzie Marine, NSW
- Connor McGinley, Northside Marine, Queensland
Commended nominations were awarded to:
- Hudson Beaty, Burgars Boat Co, SA
- Tyson Frensch, Maitland Marine Services, SA
Due to the high quality of nominees, the BIA will send Certificates of Appreciation to several deserving candidates from member businesses in boat manufacturing, retail, service, and repair.
