Bavaria 31 & 40 Cruiser

2008 BOATS

The latest European yachts show an impressive increase in specifications, from starter boats to exciting cruisers, and many will be destined for our shores during the year, reports Kevin Green.

Bavaria's new and improved 31 footer replaces the 30ft model. It has a new hull, redesigned interior and a modified deck layout with an elongated cockpit, a feature throughout the new range. A new mainsheet traveller system complements six winches on deck as standard equipment. The cockpit has plenty of room to work and to sit comfortably for relaxed sailing. A handy feature is the electric transom hatch that lowers to become a bathing platform and is also useful for stepping off on to the marina.

Other features include a new coachroof which aims for a bright interior with two deck hatches and natural wood used is throughout. The chart table has also a new design. The aft cabin and the enlarged head provide more storage space and improved ventilation. The 40 has had a similar upgrade with the extra room that makes liveaboard cruising comfortable.

:Comet 52 RS

Voted European Yacht of the Year 2008 at the Düsseldorf boat show (14m plus category), the Italian-built Comet 52 RS is designed as a long-distance cruiser. The Roman yard has just announced its distribution into Australia after an agreement reached with Performance Boating in Pittwater. The company's Ron Jacobs visited the yard and said he was very impressed with the build quality. “It's a niche market yacht and is customisable, so it?s a step up from many production boats,” said Ron.

This latest version of the Italian-built 52 comes with a new layout: three cabins, two of them abaft with one head, large saloon with dining area, which can offer two extra berths; a separated galley towards the bow, accessible by two steps, with a double-height fridge, double sink, and large stowage spaces. Also up front is the owner's cabin with head and shower. The RS (raised saloon) allows the deck to be low profiled which complements the performance-built hull for fast cruising.

: Hanse 320 and Hanse 350

The German yard recently introduced two entry-level models in terms of size to its growing range. The Judel/Vrolijk designs come with “modern T speed keels” and the company's trademark self-tacking jib setup, with a single-line reefing system and simplified mainsail handling, with coachroof-mounted sheeting. All good features for an entry-level model. Interiors have also been reworked on these smaller boats with the 350 head in the bow area, to maximise space, with separate entrance to the saloon. The 350 also has more beam and waterline than the 342 predecessor.

Steering is via one large helm wheel or two smaller wheels. It has a narrow, streamlined coachroof with long side ports, an unmistakeable characteristic of all Sly Yachts. : Sunbeam 34

This sturdy cruiser was voted European Yacht of the Year 2008 at the Düsseldorf boat show (under 12m category). This Austrian-built brand, which is coming to Australia soon, finds its niche in the market with attention to detail and customisable quality, with many boats built to order. A strongly built hull with both longitudinal and diagonal bracing makes for a particularly stable structure and topside; the decks are flush with weight-saving materials used. As you expect on a cruising boat, all lines and controls run to the cockpit and deck space is generous. Below decks, teak is used in the saloon with the main cabin forward and a wet locker is included.
