American Magic Quantum Racing Team wins in Porto Cervo

Doug DeVos and the American Magic Quantum Racing Team secured their seventh season championship title today in Sardinia, Italy, concluding the 52 SUPER SERIES Porto Cervo Range Rover Sailing Week. This victory marks a fitting end to the US flagged TP52 programme after 18 years in the fleet as Quantum Racing.

Owner-driver DeVos, a founding member of the 52 SUPER SERIES since its inception in 2012, intends to focus on family, spending more time with his grandchildren, though he will remain an active shareholder in the series. His departure will be felt by the community, but he leaves the series in robust health, with 13 boats from 10 nations competing at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda event. At least two new teams are anticipated to join the circuit in 2026, with one new boat currently under construction.

Under the guidance of tactician Terry Hutchinson, American Magic Quantum Racing dominated the season, winning three of the five regattas, including a challenging Rolex TP52 World Championship in Cascais, Portugal. Their victories contribute to their previous championships in 2024, 2022, 2018, 2016, 2014, and 2013. This season marks their third achievement of the ‘triple crown,’ winning the season championship, the world title, and the Royal Cup.

High emotions

Emotions ran high among the team as they returned to the YCCS. Hutchinson paid tribute to both current and past team members, as well as to the support from Doug and Maria DeVos and their family. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work with them over the years, highlighting the strong familial bond within the team.

DeVos reflected on the end of this chapter, stating his gratitude for being part of the journey and praising the professionalism and resilience of his team through challenging times.

No racing today, double happiness for Sled

The final day of the season saw no racing due to light winds and thunderstorms, allowing Takashi Okura’s Sled team to claim the 52 SUPER SERIES Porto Cervo Range Rover regatta title, their second win in Porto Cervo since 2019. Sled finished second overall for the season, trailing American Magic by 19 points, while Jean Luc Petithuguenin’s Paprec team achieved their best-ever finish in third place.

Don Cowie, Sled’s leader, expressed pride in the team’s performance this season and commended the efforts of everyone involved. The team excelled in breezy conditions and demonstrated strong cohesion throughout the week.

Phoenix, helmed by Hasso and Tina Plattner with Tom Slingsby and Will Ryan, placed second in the regatta, with Alegre finishing third.

Of the 50 scheduled races, 40 were completed. Both American Magic and Platoon Aviation achieved seven race wins, with Sled and Alkedo securing six wins each. All 13 teams from ten different countries managed at least one race win, showcasing the competitive nature of this year’s fleet. Gladiator and Sled were the only teams to challenge American Magic’s supremacy, which ends the season as the most successful team in 52 SUPER SERIES history.

American Magic Quantum Racing also received accolades as eSpring Game Changers for their sustained commitment to sustainability initiatives.
