Pahi returns to the PIC Coastal Classic with an international crew

After more than three decades of ownership and participation in numerous Coastal Classic races, Mark Taylor is preparing his Stewart 34, Pahi, to return to the start line. This year’s race will see a crew that includes old friends, international visitors, and two generations of sailors.

Mark estimates that Pahi has completed at least a dozen editions of the Coastal Classic, although the exact count is lost in the boat’s records. The yacht returns to the race after a seven-year hiatus, with its comeback inspired by Sydney sailors Jan Scholten and Steve Parker, who are flying to Auckland to compete aboard Pahi.

Jan and Steve, joint owners of the Stewart 34 Panchax, bring a wealth of experience, with Jan having competed in approximately 21 Sydney Hobart Yacht Races. They are excited about their first Coastal Classic, driven by a passion for the race and a strong connection with Mark and the crew.

Mark and Al Robertson, a regular crew member, have sailed together for many years, and their friendship with Jan, who works for Contender Sailcloth, adds another layer to the crew’s history. “The Coastal is iconic,” Jan remarked, highlighting the special bond formed through sailing and friendship.

Pahi is no ordinary Stewart 34. Mark plans to reattach the boat’s removable prod and prepare its reaching sails for the race. The crew is eager to hoist the A1 reaching sail, although they first needed a shakedown sail to remember how to set up the equipment.

Mark recalls the wild 2012 race, where Pahi was captured planing at speed amid fierce conditions. This year, however, the team is preparing for a much slower race, allowing time for camaraderie and reminiscence, turning the event into part reunion and part international adventure.

The 2026 PIC Coastal Classic kicks off on Friday, 23 October, at 0930, with the best vantage points from Devonport Wharf, North Head, or on a spectator boat.
