Most PIC Coastal Classic sailors desire a solid sou’wester for a fast ride to Russell. However, Quintin Fowler, owner and skipper of the More 55 Rum Bucket, is hoping for a northerly wind to enhance his boat’s performance. He stated, “We want to smash and bash!” The division includes planing boats like Sassinate (Melges 40) and Mr Kite II (Cape 40), which thrive in a following breeze. In contrast, Rum Bucket excels upwind, preferring a challenging race that pushes the crew to their limits.
At 16.7 metres long and 18 tonnes, Rum Bucket is a performance cruiser-racer rather than a lightweight carbon vessel. Quintin believes a northerly would change the race dynamics, transforming a downhill sprint into a long, demanding beat up the coast. This would lead to a more intense sailing experience, tackling waves and adjusting sails as needed.
Quintin’s history with Rum Bucket is marked by resilience. He acquired the boat in Croatia in 2019 and sailed her home across the Atlantic, facing numerous challenges, including the pandemic and an international incident involving a drug bust on a yacht carrier. For him, a challenging race past Bream Head is a welcome adventure.
“I love the Coastal – it’s such a great race, and I love it even more when the breeze is from the NORTH!!!!” Quintin’s enthusiasm is palpable as he anticipates the event. The 2026 PIC Coastal Classic starts at 0930 on Friday, 23rd October, with Nick Olson from PredictWind presenting a forecast on Monday night, 19th October. Mike “Moose” Sanderson will also share insights on tactical decisions for the race. His extensive offshore experience, including winning the Volvo Ocean Race, positions him as a valuable resource for sailors.
Attending this clinic is beneficial for all sailors, regardless of their participation in this specific race.
