When Race 1 of the Australian 18 Footers League Club Championship is sailed on Sydney Harbour next Sunday (October 18), it will mark the first championship-style race leading to the 2027 Giltinan World Championship, scheduled for March. Key teams to watch include current Giltinan world champions Yandoo and Australian champions Balmain, as well as emerging young combinations within the fleet this year.
The Rag & Famish Hotel team, featuring Ben Crafoord, Marc Chapon, and Max Nearn, is among the young teams to watch. Ben and Max previously achieved noteworthy placements in the NSW and League Club championships and are eager to improve their standings with Marc’s added experience.
Keagan York’s Shaw and Partners team, which narrowly missed winning last season’s Australian Championship and Giltinan Worlds, will introduce new crew members Otto Henry and Jerome Watts, maintaining their competitiveness. Tom Cunich from Lazarus Capital Partners and Kirk Mitchell from Vaikobi also bring in fresh talent, with both having finished strong in last season’s competitions.
The Kitchen Maker team performed well last Sunday, finishing third in the SIXT Spring Championship, marking a successful return after a break. The League will provide spectator opportunities via the ‘Royale’ ferry, departing from Double Bay Wharf, and live coverage will be available through SailMedia’s livestream, offering an immersive view of the racing action.
For those unable to attend, SailMedia will capture all the excitement with multiple camera feeds and expert commentary, ensuring viewers don’t miss a moment of the racing action.
