Gunnar Christensen, sailing the Hans Christian 34 cutter POMPOEN, was particularly exposed to the approaching tropical storm. In his broadcast, he described experiencing 50-knot winds and five-metre seas, with equipment lost from the stern, and voiced frustration at having to sail away from his intended course for two days. His account provided a human perspective to the unusual tracks that followers were observing.
By the 08:00 UTC update on 28 September, the wind had eased, and Gunnar was heading east again, although at a mere 2.6 knots. The immediate battle with the weather had given way to the slower task of rebuilding progress.
On the other hand, Mara Løvenskiold Kveseth aboard SHOWGIRL expressed concerns about her campaign’s visibility. She questioned whether to continue racing unless her shore team increased the social-media coverage of her foundation and women’s causes. Her comments raised the possibility of withdrawal, although they were not an announcement of retirement.
