Despite the late September date, the conditions in the Solent were perfect for the practice racing of the 2026 44Cup World Championship Cowes. The Royal Yacht Squadron (RYS) collaborated with RC44 teams to host the King’s Cup, where VIP guests, including Duran Duran lead singer Simon Le Bon and Sir Ben Ainslie, took part in steering races to raise funds for 11 local Isle of Wight charities.
After a brief wait for the wind to settle, racing commenced in the northeast Solent off Hill Head. The first race saw Nico Poons’ Charisma, helmed by local sailor Peter Morton, finish ahead of Team Nika, steered by Olivia Dowling, and Aleph Racing with Lucy Harrison at the helm. Morton, an accomplished sailor, has a notable record including a victory in the Admiral’s Cup and multiple wins in the Rolex Fastnet Race.
The second race, under the management of PRO Maria Torrijo, was simplified with a short upwind leg, leading around the Brambles Bank to the RYS finish line. Chris Bake and Team Aqua (with RYS Commodore Robert Bicket steering) led the fleet, finishing ahead of Aleph Racing and Team Nika. The results ended in a three-way tie, ultimately favouring Team Aqua.
At the prize-giving, Bicket expressed his joy, commenting on the wonderful conditions and thanking Bake, Team Aqua, and the VIP guests for their support. He also highlighted the historical significance of the golden trophy, originally donated by King George IV in 1826.
Chris Bake echoed similar sentiments, noting the success of the event and the significant funds raised for the charities. Lucy Harrison, a local racer, shared her enjoyment of the event, praising the team she sailed with and the experience of having a skilled tactician by her side.
Dame Ellen Macarthur, a renowned sailor, attended the prize-giving, emphasising the impact of sailing on young people at the Cancer Trust and expressing gratitude for Bake’s support over the years. The next day, the focus shifted back to the 44Cup with the first three races of the championship. Teams like Christian Zuerrer’s Black Star Sailing Team and the Turkish Wow! Sailing Team, equipped with local knowledge, geared up for the competition.
As the excitement builds for the upcoming races, both competitors and spectators anticipate thrilling action in the Solent, with a warning signal scheduled for 1200 hours.
