The sun shone brightly on the opening day of SeaLink Magnetic Island Race Week (SMIRW), with a promising breeze welcoming competitors for the Tropic Petroleum Race Day. An 11am start had sailors eager to hit the waters off Magnetic Island.
In the IRC Division, Tom Woods’ JPK 10.80, Saltwater Wine, claimed victory against fierce competition, including David Hamilton’s Farr 40 One-Design, Seeking Alpha, and Garth Ryan/Kate Leeson’s Wazza Red Boat. Woods expressed his satisfaction after the race, noting the excellent performance from his crew, including seasoned navigator Kingsley Piesse.
Woods shared insights into their strategy, highlighting their tactical manoeuvres and the importance of maintaining speed in the shifting winds. His crew, featuring notable sailors like Sandy Higgins, contributed to a strong performance, with Woods reminiscing about his past successes with the same boat name.
In Spinnaker Division 1, Peter Russell’s Italia 13.98, Vincitore, emerged victorious, showcasing impressive sailing skills and timing to best Sydney 38’s Clockwork and Cinquante. Russell was thrilled with the day’s outcome, attributing their success to strategic decisions and solid teamwork.
Spinnaker Division 3 saw Gary Davison’s Solaire clinch the win, edging out Keith Masters’ Bavaria Vision 40, Windmaiden, by a narrow margin of 44 seconds. Davison shared his experience of overcoming challenges during the race, including an early false start and navigating the course effectively with his crew.
In the Multihull division, Graeme Etherton’s The Boat leveraged local knowledge and optimal conditions to secure a win against competitors like Gordon Beath’s Roamance.
Principal Race Officer Denis Thompson reported favourable conditions, with a south-easterly breeze of 10-15 knots enhancing the racing experience. He expressed optimism for the week ahead, anticipating competitive racing across all divisions.
As the day concluded, excitement remained high among competitors, with many looking forward to the upcoming races and the potential for more thrilling outcomes. Racing will continue from 11am tomorrow, with a diverse range of yacht classes participating in the event.
