Golden Globe Race – World first – 24/7 one-way live window into the 2026 fleet

The 2026 McIntyre Golden Globe Race will introduce a groundbreaking feature, the “GGR Window,” allowing followers unprecedented access to the race without compromising the traditional sailing ethos.

This innovative “MAGIC BLACK BOX” will provide a one-way live stream into the lives of seven entrants, with viewers able to tune in 24/7 to watch scheduled live transmissions and receive updates. The stream will feature daily live broadcasts, breaking news interruptions, and a scrolling news ticker for fleet updates.

Set to commence on September 6, 2026, from Les Sables d’Olonne, France, this race encourages participants to adhere strictly to the 1968 sailing practices, using only traditional tools like paper charts and sextants, while the technology ensures no modern communication aids are accessible to the sailors.

The GGR Window is designed to deliver live video, boat movement, and selected data from the participating yachts, controlled solely by the sailors. Each skipper can broadcast during a designated time slot by simply pressing a button, while GGR control manages the production of the feed.

Information displayed to the audience includes heart rates, yacht pitch and roll, wind speed and direction, and speed over ground, all of which remain invisible to the sailors themselves. This ensures that the entrants maintain the pure spirit of the race.

The seven skippers participating in the first GGR Window include Ertan Beskardes (UK), Stephen Wraith (USA), Gunnar Christensen (USA), Etienne Messikommer (Switzerland), Louis Kerdelhué (France), Helga Marie “Mara” Løvenskiold Kveseth (Norway), and Pär Nyman (Sweden).

Don McIntyre, the GGR Founder and Race Director, expressed excitement about the project, stating it will significantly enhance audience engagement without impacting the traditional sailing experience. The GGR Window aims to inspire a new generation of sailors and enthusiasts.

The initial test of the GGR Window is scheduled for August 16, 2026, during the SITraN Challenge Prologue Race. With a planned investment of around €300,000, this project underscores a commitment to growing the audience for the GGR, which recorded significant advertising value in previous editions.

With a focus on delivering a unique viewing experience while preserving the race’s historical integrity, the GGR Window marks a significant milestone in solo sailing competitions.
