Vayu leads the Puerto Portals 52 SUPER SERIES Sailing Week after a remarkable opening day with a fleet of 14 boats. The day’s highlight was the triumph of the newest entry, Swedish flagged Trinity Racing, helmed by rookie owner Joakim Sundberg, who secured victory in the second race just a month after the boat’s launch.
The regatta featured two windward races in light winds on the Bay of Palma, where the Whitcraft family’s Vayu, skippered by Don Whitcraft, showed impressive form, taking first and fourth places to secure the event lead. Provezza, helmed by Ergin Imre, stands in second place, while Trinity Racing is in third, trailing Vayu by four points.
Sundberg expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance, reflecting on their rigorous training over the winter on a Cape 31 in Palma waters, where they also clinched the Trofeo Princesa Sofia regatta. Despite being new to competitive sailing, Sundberg demonstrated a commendable work ethic and team spirit, contributing hands-on to crew tasks.
After an early setback for Eric de Turckheim, who withdrew from Race 2 due to equipment failure, the competition tightened between Provezza and Trinity Racing, with Sundberg’s crew winning by mere seconds.
Sundberg remarked on the unexpected success of the day, praising his team for their tactical decisions and consistent execution of their training strategies. His focus and determination were palpable as he navigated the final stretch, thrilled with their overall performance.
Vayu, under the guidance of Don Whitcraft, displayed impressive speed and strategic prowess, successfully navigating the challenging conditions of the day. Many Weiller, calling tactics for Vayu, emphasised the importance of seizing opportunities and maintaining good judgement in a crowded fleet, which has increased to 14 boats this season.
