Woollahra, NSW — The 2026 NSW Optimist Interclub Series commenced at Woollahra Sailing Club on Sunday, 3 May, showcasing over 80 junior sailors from various clubs across New South Wales on Sydney Harbour.
The event featured a solid turnout, reflecting the growing popularity of the Optimist class and the Interclub series as a crucial development path for young sailors.
Competitors enjoyed ideal autumn racing conditions with a steady 12–17 knot northerly breeze, allowing race officials to conduct a full schedule of short-course races. This setup provided participants with the chance to demonstrate their skills in boat handling, tactical awareness, and racecraft.
“The conditions were just about perfect for junior racing,” commented a regatta spokesperson. “It was fantastic to see such a large and enthusiastic fleet enjoying competitive racing in a safe and supportive environment.”
The racing began after a briefing for competitors, with efficient race management facilitating a smooth programme throughout the day. Families and supporters created a lively atmosphere, showcasing the strong community spirit integral to the Interclub series.
Results from Round 1 highlighted outstanding performances from various fleets:
**Open Fleet**:
1. Fish (AUS 1575) – Skipper: Walter Healy (WSC)
2. Faccenda Sailing Team (AUS 1920) – Skipper: Luca De Giosa (HHSC)
3. Come Together (AUS 1720) – Skipper: Sijia Deng (HHSC) *(1st Female)*
**Intermediate Fleet**:
1. Bolt (AUS 1777) – Skipper: Omar Mansour (GRSC)
2. Far Out (AUS 1734) – Skipper: Max Hughes (RSYS – Academy)
3. Lord Lion (AUS 1729) – Skipper: Lara Dorling (RPAYC – OTB) *(1st Female)*
