Optimist Sailors Take on Pittwater at RPAYC
Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club welcomed 135 junior ‘Opti’ sailors from more than 15 clubs to Pittwater for the 2026 NSW Optimist State Championship, with competitors across the Open, Intermediate, and Green Fleets taking on a weekend of light, shifty and demanding conditions. Despite the challenging breeze, the regatta delivered excellent racing and valuable experience for the sailors, especially in light-air sailing. The 30 sailors in Green Fleet completed a full series of 6 races, whereas the Open and Intermediate Fleets spent Day 1 ashore and had a tough Day 2 trying to get races in. Open Fleet completed 3 races and Intermediate 2 races before the time limit hit. Pittwater delivered a challenging day, with glass out conditions through to a perfect north-easterly breeze by late afternoon.
The championship would not have been possible without the support of the many parents, coaches and volunteers who helped make the event such a success on and off the water. The 2026 NSW Optimist Championship finished on a high, giving every sailor valuable experience, lasting memories and plenty to be proud of after a hard-fought weekend on Pittwater.
RPAYC girl sailors were also awarded with the top 3 places, and 1st and 3rd overall in the Intermediate Fleet.
