Storm Bay Apparel, a Tasmanian-owned and operated outdoor clothing adventure line under the Volpica brand, has put their weight behind this weekend’s SB20 Australian Championship in Hobart, as the naming rights sponsor for the event.
Owner, Vincent Walker, a passionate Tasmanian graphic designer and surfer with a deep love of the outdoors, is excited to be supporting the event for the first time.
“Storm Bay Apparel ® is all about embracing the elements – from mountain peaks to the open ocean, and every trail that connects them – with adventure and community at the core.
“These are the same values that strongly align with the SB20 Class and the sailors who make this event what it is.
“Thank you to the organisers, the Derwent Sailing Squadron and the competitors, we’re excited to be part of the journey and can’t wait to see the action unfold this weekend.
“We’re proud to stand behind the event as its sponsor,” said Walker.
2026 is shaping up as a very positive year for SB20 Australia with the Association awarded the hosting rights for the 2029 SB20 World Championship following a competitive bidding process.
Australian Class President, Dr Paul McCartney, said the SB20 Class in Australia and overseas is seeing renewed interest and engagement, with a new boat builder onboard, and a great program of events planned for the next few years.
“A lot has been happening in the Class over the last couple of years with Devoti Sailing, a well-respected and experienced company led by Olympic medallist Luca Devoti, appointed as the boat builder for the Class, and a new approach to marketing adopted by the World Council.
“We were absolutely thrilled to be awarded the 2029 SB20 World Championship which will be co-hosted by the Derwent Sailing Squadron and the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania.
“Being appointed as the 2029 hosts is recognition of the impressive world championship we hosted in 2018, and acknowledgement that the River Derwent is a brilliant place for competitive racing and Tasmania is a unique place to visit.
“And locally, it’s great to have the support of Storm Bay Apparel for our event this weekend,” said McCartney.
14 boats will be on the start line for the 2026 Storm Bay Apparel SB20 Australian Championship which starts this Friday 27th March and concludes on Sunday.
