44Cup Calero Marinas victory for Peninsula Racing

John Bassadone’s Peninsula Racing secured victory today at the 44Cup Calero Marinas in Lanzarote, triumphing by five points over the latest entry, Markus Törnqvist’s GeMera Racing. The latter tied on points with veteran team Team Aqua, managing to win on countback. This marks a significant win for Peninsula Racing, who have been competing in the series since 2010. Their last event victory was in 2017 at the same venue.

“It was a long time coming, but it’s amazing. I’m feeling great,” said a jubilant Bassadone following his first win in nine years. He attributed the team’s success to excellent starts, solid boat speed, and tactical prowess under challenging conditions. He praised tactician Vasco Vascotto and main trimmer Jordi Calafat for their outstanding contributions during the regatta.

Competing fiercely, Peninsula Racing showcased their improved capabilities, finishing in the top six throughout the twelve races, and clinching the first race of the final day. Bassadone remarked on the team’s enhanced speed, which made tactical decisions more straightforward. Vascotto noted improved consistency across the fleet as a key factor in their success.

Entering the final day, Peninsula Racing was in second place, a point behind Team Aqua. Their performance in the first two races bolstered their lead, while GeMera Racing struggled in the first race of the day. The final race served as a tactical match race against Team Aqua, with Peninsula Racing successfully covering their competitors to assure their position.

Meanwhile, GeMera Racing battled mixed fortunes throughout the week but managed to win three races, including the last. Tactician Francesco Bruni mentioned the difficulty of the conditions but expressed satisfaction with their overall performance, especially in the final race.

Aleph Racing concluded the event in fourth place, posting strong results on the last day, though suffering from earlier mixed results. Team Charisma’s consistent performance saw them conclude the event without a race win, yet they consistently placed well, securing the fifth position overall. In the meantime, the 44Cup will now move to Puntaldia, Sardinia for the next event scheduled from 22-26 April.
