After a season in 2025 focusing on consolidation and leisurely cruising, the J Class Association anticipates a busy and vibrant 2026 season. A resurgence in activity is expected, primarily due to two significant developments.
The recent acquisition of the J Class yacht Rainbow by renowned owner Peter Harrison is a major catalyst for this revitalisation. Harrison, a winner of the Admiral’s Cup, is keen to engage actively in J Class racing with a dedicated programme that includes participation in upcoming events, especially the Palma Superyacht Regatta in June and Les Voiles de Saint Tropez in October.
Another important factor is the return of Louise Morton, who resumes her role with the class after previous tenures. Morton aims to foster collaboration between existing and prospective owners to strengthen the class’s future. The focus will be on enhancing the racing environment, encouraging participation, and promoting the elegant heritage of the J Class yachts.
Racing activity for 2026 is set to be significant, with plans for both Rainbow and Svea to compete under the J Class handicap system at the aforementioned regattas. Rainbow will be manned by an accomplished international team from Harrison’s Jolt Sailing Team, well-versed in competitive sailing.
Svea’s crew is equally enthusiastic about returning to the race course, eager to build upon their successful 2025 season sailing around the Caribbean and East Coast USA. The energy brought in from the new owner of Rainbow is predicted to invigorate all participants within the class.
Additionally, Shamrock V, which underwent extensive refurbishment, is scheduled for active participation in several events, including the Cyclades Cup and the Spetses Classic Regatta, and has been invited to contest prestigious races as well.
Notably, Velsheda will be taking a sabbatical year for a significant refit, but the build of J-2 is progressing strongly, and it’s anticipated that this new yacht will see action in 2027. Morton’s leadership in the class aims to enhance collaboration among owners to foster growth in participation and racing activities.
2026 stands to be a pivotal year, welcoming back both old and new elements to reinvigorate the allure and excitement of J Class sailing.
