Belgium Ocean Racing – Curium wins the record-breaking stage

GLOBE40 2025/2026 – PRESS RELEASE No. 24 – NOVEMBER 1, 2025

On November 1st at 1:05 PM UTC, the BELGIUM OCEAN RACING – CURIUM team crossed the finish line victorious in the second leg of the GLOBE40, covering 8,420 nautical miles at an average speed of 11.73 knots. The race concluded dramatically with only 9 minutes separating the top three teams after 29 days and 22 hours of intense competition. Initially leading was CREDIT MUTUEL, but a fatal wind shadow near the island six miles from the finish allowed the Belgian team to seize the victory.

The second leg commenced on October 2nd from Mindelo Bay, Cape Verde, showcasing a variety of challenging weather conditions throughout its 8,420 nautical mile course. The competitors navigated through the Doldrums, the Roaring Forties, and faced complex wind and current patterns as they approached reunion after their long journey across the ocean.

A leg of all records

This stage marked multiple records, including the longest leg of the edition and the longest-ever sailed by the new generation Class40s. A significant achievement was the Belgian team’s 24-hour speed record of 457.72 miles, which underscores their exceptional performance.

A hard-won victory for a project in rebuilding

The BELGIUM OCEAN RACING team consists of Renaud Dehareng and Jonas Gerckens, who have overcome numerous challenges, including a retirement from a previous race and significant setbacks in securing their vessel. Following their third-place finish in the prologue and a second in the leg from Cadiz to Cape Verde, the team’s victory now positions them at the potential top of the overall standings, pending final confirmations.

A New Status for the Class40

The success of the Class40 boats in this grueling leg highlights their reliability and capability in offshore racing, promising future interest in Class40 competitions. As they prepare to set off for Sydney on November 22nd, competitors anticipate more fierce rivalries as they navigate the Roaring Forties.
