Globe40 -To each their own “Diagonale des Fous”

GLOBE40 2025/2026 – PRESS RELEASE NO. 23 – OCTOBER 2, 2025

On the way to Reunion Island, after leaving Cape Verde at 2:00 p.m. in magnificent conditions, competitors are preparing for the longest leg of the race, covering at least 7,000 miles. This stage presents a unique challenge, navigating through diverse geographical and meteorological landscapes.

Mindelo: A battered but resilient Cape Verde

Upon arrival in Mindelo, the GLOBE40 skippers faced an island recovering from Tropical Storm Erin, which caused significant damage and loss of life in August. In the wake of the storm, the community’s resilience shone through, with most infrastructure restored and life returning to normal. GLOBE40 crews contributed by bringing essential school supplies for children affected by the disaster, reaffirming the bond with Cape Verde.

The first and biggest leg of the race

Christian Dumard, the race’s weather consultant, predicts light easterly winds at the start. The fleet will encounter the challenging Doldrums, known for its unpredictable conditions. As they move into the Southern Hemisphere, skippers will navigate a long reaching leg and contend with the Agulhas Current, which can reach speeds of 5 knots. The upcoming finish line will be challenging due to calm winds behind the towering Reunion Island.

With minimal point gaps after the first stage, competition will be fierce. CREDIT MUTUEL leads but only by 2 points over BELGIUM OCEAN RACING – CURIUM. The excitement on the water is palpable, mirroring the camaraderie built among teams since the race began.

Unprecedented public and media enthusiasm

GLOBE40 has garnered significant public interest, with over 100,000 attendees at the farewell party in Cadiz. Media coverage has been extensive, with 400 pieces reported and nearly 3 million views across social media platforms. The adventure continues to excite both participants and followers alike.

As the fleet approaches Reunion Island, anticipation is building for a warm welcome, orchestrated by local partners and the island’s community.
