Globe40 – Fast gallop towards the Canaries – 24-hour record broken

After the superb start from Cadiz on Sunday, the Class40s of the 2nd edition of the GLOBE40 showcased their competitive spirit. By late Tuesday, the leading boats reached the Canary Islands, having already covered nearly 700 miles.

Initially starting the race in light winds, the teams soon encountered the famed trade winds, allowing them to accelerate into downwind conditions. Their route took them towards Madeira before turning south during the night, with the first group enjoying a long glide towards the Canary Islands at speeds approaching 20 knots. This marked a significant test of their strategic planning, as there were no mandatory marks to navigate.

The young German team, NEXT GENERATION BOATING AROUND THE WORLD, emerged as frontrunners, achieving an average speed of 12.20 knots from the outset and maintaining a lead of around ten miles over CREDIT MUTUEL. Their strategic decision to pass between the islands of Tenerife and Gran Canaria sets them apart, while CREDIT MUTUEL opted for a route east of Gran Canaria. BELGIUM OCEAN RACING is close behind in third place, less than 2 miles from the second spot, promising an exciting competition ahead.

Competition remains fierce among other teams, with BARCO BRASIL and FREE DOM engaged in a tight race, currently favouring the Brazilian entry. WILSON AROUND THE WORLD and JANGADA RACING are also battling closely, while WHISKEY JACK seeks to regain speed, relying on Mélodie Schaffer’s experience to close the gap in future legs.

In a remarkable achievement, the 24-hour distance record on the GLOBE40, previously held by a Canadian skipper at 350 miles, was surpassed by Lennart Burke and Melvin, who recorded 370 miles within the same timeframe. Enthusiasts eagerly await further record-breaking ventures as the race continues.
