American Magic leads at midpoint of Puerto Portals 52 SUPER SERIES Sailing Week
Doug DeVos’ American Magic Quantum Racing has claimed a narrow one-point lead after a challenging three-race day at the Puerto Portals 52 SUPER SERIES Sailing Week in Mallorca. The team emerged victorious in the third race, edging out their competitors in a series marked by intense competition and shifting winds.
After five races, American Magic Quantum Racing sits atop the leaderboard with a total of 19 points, closely followed by Shawn and Tina Kang’s Alpha+ at 20 points. Andy Soriano’s Alegre dropped to third place after a disappointing performance in the last two races, tied with Taksahi Okura’s Sled and Ergin Imre’s Provezza, all at 28 points.
The day’s racing conditions were typical for Palma, with winds building up to 14 knots, yet the unpredictable shifts made it difficult for teams to maintain consistency. Andrea Lacorte’s Alkedo Vitamina won the first race, exploiting the left side of the course effectively. In the second race, Tony Langley’s Gladiator capitalized on a significant right shift to secure victory.
American Magic’s success in the third race was attributed to tactical decisions made by tactician Terry Hutchinson, who noted their luck in navigating a left shift at a critical moment. Despite their lead, Hutchinson emphasized the team’s focus on continuous improvement rather than resting on their current standings.
Nick Egnot-Johnston, the helm for Alpha+, expressed satisfaction with his team’s ability to adapt to the challenging conditions, indicating that their recent gains in performance can be attributed to the addition of experienced tactician Ado Stead.
As the competition heats up, the teams look forward to another demanding three-race day tomorrow, with the leaderboard showing how quickly fortunes can change in the fiercely competitive fleet.
