Australian Sailing Board appoints Acting CEO

The Board of Australian Sailing is pleased to announce that Ben Callard has been announced as the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the organisation, following the departure of Ben Houston who had held the role of CEO for the past six years.

“The Australian Sailing Board has met and discussed options for delegation of CEO responsibilities in the interim period until a new CEO is appointed,” said Australian Sailing President, Shevaun Bruland.

“After careful consideration, the board has decided to appoint Ben Callard in the position of Acting CEO of Australian Sailing.”

Callard is a lifelong sailor and a member of Australian Sailing’s Senior Leadership Team in his role as Head of Community Support and Events. He had been the Executive Officer of Yachting Queensland before the One Sailing governance model was implemented in 2016 and is the current Chair and General Director of QSport, the peak body for sport in Queensland.

“On behalf of the Board I congratulate Ben on this appointment,” continued Bruland. “I know he will work to continue the momentum we have as an organisation, with support from the Senior Leadership Team and Board members, while we undertake a comprehensive recruitment process.

“We thank Ben Houston sincerely for his leadership as well as his dedication and commitment to Australian Sailing over his tenure. Ben leaves on very good terms with the organisation and we wish him continued success in his next endeavour.”

Callard shared the sentiment on the departure of Houston and his appointment as Acting CEO.

“I would like to extend my acknowledgement and congratulations to Ben Houston on a very successful tenure as Australian Sailing CEO,” said Callard. “I very much enjoyed working with Ben, I look forward to keeping in touch and wish him all the success for his future.”

“I would like to thank the Board of Australian Sailing for their support of me, and I look forward to the challenge of stepping up into the Acting CEO role through this crucial transition period. I am excited about working with the Senior Leadership Team and broader Australian Sailing team and community to continue the positive momentum we have all achieved together.”

The recruitment of the position of CEO is ongoing at the Sportspeople website, with applications closing on Wednesday 4 June.
