80th Rolex Sydney Hobart hits 100 entries with Back 2 Black

Sean Langman, Managing Director of Noakes Group, is set to compete in his first Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race with his yacht Back 2 Black, formerly known as Khumbu. This year marks the 80th edition of the race, and Back 2 Black is the 100th entry, making it a significant milestone in the event’s history.

The yacht’s name is a tribute to the late musician Amy Winehouse, who co-wrote the song “Back to Black” in 2006. Langman, who has participated in 33 races, believes this yacht has the potential to secure a podium finish and possibly win the coveted Tattersall Cup. He expressed confidence in the yacht’s ability to compete effectively against its larger counterparts, emphasising the strategy of knowing when to push and when to conserve energy during the race.

Langman has a rich history of sailing, having raced on various yachts including the Reichel/Pugh 69 Moneypenny and the Open 66 Grundig. He mentioned that ocean racing presents opportunities for all participants, regardless of the size of their vessels. He is particularly enthusiastic about racing with a crew composed mostly of friends and amateur sailors.

In preparation for the race, Back 2 Black is currently en route to Australia, alongside another competitor, SHK Scallywag. Upon arrival, the team will conduct additional work on the yacht to enhance its performance, including waterproofing and adjustments to improve its IRC rating. Langman is eager to see how the yacht performs against other 40-footers during the upcoming Cabbage Tree Island Race.

Langman’s ambition to win the Rolex Sydney Hobart stems from a lifelong dream, having first competed in the race at the age of 20. He feels a consistent thrill every time he sees the Organ Pipes and rounds Tasman Island, stating that each race invokes the same excitement as his first. “This will be my 34th race and it feels exactly the same as the first time,” he remarked, reflecting on his enduring passion for the event.

As the race approaches, Langman is focused on training and ensuring that Back 2 Black is ready to compete fiercely against a talented fleet.
