55th Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofía – Day 1

Sunny Bay of Palma tests Olympic racers as Sofia regatta gets under way

Day 1 of the 55th Trofeo Princesa Sofia Mallorca regatta presented challenging conditions for competitors as unexpected wind shifts occurred in the Bay of Palma. Despite these hurdles, the event showcased an extraordinary spectacle.

The competition kicked off with a brisk offshore northerly breeze, first testing the 49er skiffs. However, the wind soon diminished, delaying the start for the 470 Mixed fleet.

Among the competitors, the Spanish duo of 470 sailors, Jordi Xammar and Marta Cardona, returned from a rocky start, recovering from a starting disqualification (UFD) in the first race to secure a second place and a race win, placing them at the top of the Day 1 results. They currently lead over Portugal’s Diogo Costa and Carolina Joao, who had taken the lead in last year’s standings.

“We got this strange UFD which we did not understand as we felt we were in the second row of the start,” said Xammar, highlighting the struggles faced in an unpredictable sailing environment. “This is an important regatta for us to do well, but at the end the big goal is at the Olympics. We have had a full year working together and so now we are a much more solid team.”

The Cascais pair of Costa and Joao also ended the day with three points after three races. Costa noted that their experience in navigating tricky conditions allowed them to perform well: “We made good decisions and kept our heads up looking around.”

Defending champions Martin Wrigley and Bettine Harris from Great Britain faced difficulties, placing 31st overall, demonstrating the unpredictability of the regatta’s opening day.

In the 49er Skiffs, a three-way tie for first place emerged, as Denmark’s Frederik Rask and Jakob Precht, France’s Lucas Rual and Emile Amoros, and Australia’s Harry Price and Max Paul each ended with three points after their respective races.

The Women’s Skiff class, the 49er FX, saw Belgium’s Isaura Maenhaut and Anouk Guerts at the forefront following a strong performance, while GBR’s Freya Black and Saskia Tidey are currently in third.

The ILCA 7 fleet had a challenging day, beginning their first race around 12:30 but only concluding the second race by 18:00. In the Nacra 17 mixed multihull class, Swedish teams dominated the standings, with a strong showing by Emil Jarudd and Hanna Jonsson.

The Kite and iQFOiL fleets commence their regatta on Tuesday.
