52 SUPER SERIES – Puerto Portals Day 4

Doug DeVos’ American Magic Quantum Racing is on the brink of clinching a remarkable third consecutive regatta title at the Puerto Portals 52 SUPER SERIES Sailing Week, leading by 18 points with two races remaining. Their strategy remains focused on continual improvement, aiming for at least one percent better performance each day.

Under the tactical guidance of Terry Hutchinson and navigator Sara Stone, Quantum Racing showcased their prowess by winning two out of three races today, demonstrating their ability to convert modest starts into top finishes. With conditions featuring a sea breeze of 10 to 14 knots, they showed exceptional skills in both upwind and downwind manoeuvres.

The battle for the remaining podium spots is heating up, with only four points separating second-placed Sled from Brazil’s Crioula, currently in sixth. Sled, helmed by Takashi Okura, faced ups and downs today, finishing with a third, fourth, and a disappointing tenth, while Alpha +, tied with Sled, managed to bounce back with a strong second place.

Andy Soriano’s Alegre sits just one point behind in third, while Andrea Lacorte’s Alkedo and the Plass brothers’ Crioula are also in contention for podium finishes. A thrilling showdown is expected tomorrow, with Sled’s mainsheet trimmer Don Cowie expressing the team’s intention to chase victory in every race.

Alpha +’s Ado Stead is optimistic despite their race penalty, as they aim for their first podium finish. Stead reflected on the day’s challenges but remains focused on battling for a top position.

American Magic’s strategist, Victor Diaz de Leon, acknowledged the team’s focus on improvement and teamwork, highlighting their consistent performance. Meanwhile, Harm Müller-Spreer’s Platoon Aviation, struggling earlier in the regatta, managed to secure a win in the first race today but faced penalties in subsequent races, leaving them in a challenging tenth position.

As the regatta moves into its final day, two races are scheduled with a warning signal set for 1300hrs.
