Andy Soriano’s Alegre team kicked off the Puerto Portals 52 SUPER SERIES Sailing Week with a solid win in the first race of the competition, marking a successful return to Puerto Portals for the tenth year. This victory is particularly significant as it is Alegre’s first win since June, and it showcases the promising debut of Olympic gold medallist Paul Goodison with the team.
The race was characterized by a 12-17 knot wind and choppy conditions on the Bay of Palma, but Alegre managed to lead right from the start, never losing their position. They were followed closely by the Whitcraft family’s Vayu, which finished second, and Shawn and Tina Kang’s Alpha+, which secured third place.
Goodison expressed his excitement about joining the Alegre program, emphasizing the challenges of transitioning from foiling boats to monohulls and the different pressures involved in racing at this level. Ado Stead, who joined Alpha+ as tactician, also had positive remarks about their performance, despite initial challenges with positioning at the start.
New navigator Elvira Llabrés debuted with Vayu, transitioning to the TP52 after experience with other teams, and felt comfortable working with her new crew, highlighting the ease of communication.
Looking ahead, racing is scheduled to continue on Wednesday, with the possibility of up to three races planned for the day.
