The 40th Pittwater to Coffs Harbour Yacht Race, set to commence on 27 March, has been cancelled by the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club (RPAYC) due to extreme weather conditions forecast to affect the NSW coast.
This race will now be postponed until March 2027, with the specific date announced closer to the event.
Weather expert Roger Badham has been providing updates to the RPAYC, indicating the likelihood of a rapidly developing low pressure system, with wind gusts forecasted to reach up to 45 knots. The significant sea conditions expected, particularly during the first 24 hours, raise safety concerns.
Commodore of RPAYC, Rob McClelland, stated that the Race Committee, Sailing Office, and Club leadership extensively evaluated the weather forecasts and consulted with professional weather routers and the Bureau of Meteorology. Key considerations included the race’s safety categorisation, the experience levels of participating crews, and the anticipated sea conditions.
“The consistent forecast indicated parts of the fleet could face conditions akin to Category 1 racing, which posed unacceptable risks given the varied skill levels among crews this year,” McClelland noted.
Furthermore, the logistical complexities of conducting such a significant race amid unsafe weather conditions were significant. Ensuring the safe transport of vessels to the start and back to their ports added to the decision-making process. The early cancellation allows crews to return home safely before the expected turbulent weather arrives.
McClelland emphasised, “After a thorough discussion, the decision was unanimous; safety must be our priority, protecting competitors and volunteers alike.” He acknowledged the effort that participants invested in preparation for this event, expressing regret for the disappointment caused by the cancellation. Paid entry fees will be carried over to next year, with hopes for a robust fleet return for the 40th race.
