2025 ILCA Under-21 World Championships – Day 2

Dun Laoghaire, Ireland | 25 August 2025

Day two of the 2025 ILCA Under-21 World Championships on Dublin Bay presented sailors with fast and furious conditions, testing their stamina and skills. South-east winds gusting up to 25 knots resulted in exhilarating downwind surfing and steep two-metre seas, challenging competitors physically and technically.

After four races in the ILCA 6 Women’s fleet, Roos Wind from the Netherlands leads the pack. Wind, a former youth world champion, won the first race of the day, her second victory of the series, and followed it with a second-place finish. Close behind her are Isabella Mendoza Cabezas from the USA and Ginevra Caracciolo Di Brienza from Italy, both of whom are vying for the top positions.

Caracciolo Di Brienza expressed her enjoyment of the conditions, stating, “I really enjoyed today, it was fantastic—strong winds and big waves,” and acknowledged her position in third place overall. Despite Wind’s strong lead, the series is far from over, with the midpoint approaching on Tuesday evening, leaving room for changes in standings.

In the ILCA 7 Men’s championship, Edward Reid from Australia maintains a perfect scoreline with race wins, while fellow Aussie Isaac Schotte also posted two wins and a fifth place. With one more day of qualifying before the fleets split, sailors are focused on maintaining consistency to secure strong positions in the Gold fleet.

“It was full hiking conditions—perfect ILCA sailing!” said Hidde Schraffordt from the Netherlands, who scored a fifth and a tenth. The camaraderie among the competitors was evident as they returned to shore tired yet satisfied after five hours of racing.

Looking ahead, Tuesday’s forecast predicts more breeze, but with an offshore wind direction, sailors will face tactical challenges across all fleets.
