SMEG Australia’s longstanding partnership with the Australian 18 Footers League has reached an impressive milestone of 30 years, contributing significantly to the skiff racing scene. Since 1996, this collaboration has yielded five JJ Giltinan World Championships, two Australian Championships, three NSW Championships, and seven Club Championships for SMEG. The partnership has provided top-tier boats for elite skippers and crews in the class.
The relationship extends beyond mere sponsorship; it involves regular engagement of SMEG staff and business associates at the League’s facilities and events. The partnership began in the 1996-97 season after a pivotal phone call initiated by John Winning, leading to the sponsorship agreement between SMEG and the League.
Trevor Barnabas, the first skipper under this partnership, achieved notable success with three Giltinan World titles in 1997 and 1998. His success set a high standard for subsequent seasons. Following his retirement, several accomplished skippers took the helm, including Sydney 2000 Olympian Daniel Phillips and David Witt, a renowned international skipper.
Over the years, SMEG has consistently demonstrated their commitment to excellence in skiff racing. Michael Coxon, who became the sixth skipper in the 2018-19 season, led the team to its fifth World Championship victory in 2021. After his retirement, Nathan McNamara and Ashlen ‘Ash’ Rooklyn took charge, with Rooklyn set to lead the team into the 31st season of sponsorship in 2026-27.
Rooklyn expressed his excitement about the upcoming season and the inclusion of Ricky Bridge, a key member of previous championship teams. Rooklyn aims for consistency throughout the season while holding aspirations for a future Giltinan world championship.
The partnership has fostered not only success on the water but also a sense of community, with SMEG prioritising relationships with partners and customers. As they transition into their 31st year, the collaboration shows no signs of waning, with plans to enhance marketing efforts and promote the SMEG brand within the sailing community.
The Australian 18 Footers League’s President Simon Nearn highlighted the importance of such enduring partnerships, emphasising trust and shared vision. SMEG’s Chris Norman echoed this sentiment, underscoring the family-oriented approach of the company and its commitment to nurturing relationships within the sailing community.
