18ft Skiffs – David Porter, King of Sydney Harbour in the 1970s

During the 1970s, David Porter established himself as a prominent figure in the 18 footer sailing scene in Sydney, earning the title of the ‘King of Sydney Harbour’. His impressive career spanned from the 1970-71 season to the 1979-80 season, during which he secured the 1975 World Championship, three Australian Championships, and five NSW State Championships, along with numerous club titles at the NSW 18 Footers League and the Sydney Flying Squadron.

Porter’s sailing career was marked by fierce competition against notable sailors, including Hugh Treharne, Bob Holmes, Iain Murray, and other elite skippers from both Australia and New Zealand. He began his sailing journey at the age of eight in a VJ and quickly progressed through various skiff classes, winning his first Interdominion 12ft skiff Championship in 1966 and successfully defending it in 1967.

After a brief hiatus from sailing to pursue water skiing, Porter returned to competitive sailing at 24, choosing to race in the 18s, which were known for their thrilling competition. With the support of his family business, Porter Marine, he built his first 18 footer, named Aussie, in 1970. The boat’s innovative design helped Porter secure multiple victories, including the State title and club championships.

Throughout the early 1970s, Porter adapted to changing boat designs, transitioning to lighter and faster models, including the Bruce Farr-designed KB, which he raced to significant success. His partnership with Tooth and Co for sponsorship allowed him to compete at high levels, culminating in a clean sweep of major championships in the 1974-75 season.

Despite his successes, Porter faced challenges, including unfortunate circumstances during the World Championships, where changes in racing rules and fierce competition hindered his chances for victory. The 1977 World Championship ended in heartbreak as he narrowly lost to the New Zealand team, and he faced further disappointments in subsequent years, finishing as runner-up multiple times.

By the end of the 1979-80 season, after years of competitive racing and sponsorship changes, Porter expressed his disillusionment with the sport, marking the conclusion of an extraordinary decade in the 18 footer class. His legacy as one of the greatest skippers in the history of Australian sailing remains unparalleled.
