Reader wants information on junk rigs

Roger,
I have searched the internet a few times about junk rigs. The most notable enthusiasts seem to be Blondie Hasler (contestant in the first round-the-world race), and Annie Hill of "Voyaging on a Small Income" fame. Both of these people are/were junk rig enthusiasts, and their explanations and reasoning are quite convincing. Further research shows various other enthusiasts, and a fair amount of information on how it works, and the advantages/disadvantages there-in.

There is even a Junk Rig Association, which also gives a fairly detailed information.
Unfortunately, I have not yet seen an unbiased description/analysis of junk rig sailing. It seems to offer various economic advantages, plus the tremendous advantage of simplicity, and ease of use, and has the disadvantage of poor pointing into the wind. The usual synopsis is that is a good rig for cruisers, but poor for racing.

Still, I have asked around two states of Australia, and have yet to meet anybody who has ever sailed a junk rigged boat. I did see mention of a junk-rigged boat in one article on the cost of cruising, but there was nothing about the actual sailing of the boat in question.
And I actually found a boat that was once junk-rigged (currently moored at Garden Point in the Brisbane River), but unfortunately the mast had been removed for an unspecified reason.

The scarcity of junk-rigged boats seems to be the main reason for the lack of information/analysis, but I will keep searching. If I find anything I will let you know, and if I can manage to cadge a sail on such a vessel, I will provide you with my impressions.
