'Guernsey’s' the garment can be traced back over 500 years, in the early 16th century,licences were granted by the crown to import wool from England to the islands.Guernsey’s were originally hand knitted in one piece, as an essential garment forseaman, designed to keep him warm and dry in all conditions.
Both Mary 1st and Elizabeth 1st wore articals of Guernsey knitwear, Mary Queen of Scots wore Guernsey stockings to her excecution. By the 19 century the Guernsey had become well known and respected, Lord Nelson had recomended the garment to the Admiralty as a valuable article of naval clothing, and in 1857 soldiers of the garrison in Halifax Nova Scotia, were issued with Guernsey’s as a part of their winter uniform.
Guernsey’s were also essential kit on The Virgin Atlantic Challenger, as well as several of the British Americas Cup Challengers. Genuine Guernsey’s are hand knitted in the island from 100% English Worsted Wool which is given an extra high twist at the spinning stage, to produce a hard wearing yarn, each garment is supplied with a tag signed by the indvidual maker.
The sizing is from 38 inches (yes old school) increasing by 2 “ increments to 54 inchesit is recomended for correct sizing, to purchase a Guernsey that is 3 inches larger than your chest size. They are also availabe on special order in various colours and in childrens sizes. In an increasing mechanised world, hand crafted products have their own special attraction.
