Last week, the editors at Sailing World published the results of the Quantum Key West Fantasy Sailing League. Ninety-five people participated by guessing the winning boat in five, hotly-contested divisions: IRC 52, Farr 40, Melges 32, Melges 24 and J/80.
Looking at the League results, it’s notable that Quantum programs dominated the picks for two of the classes with a solid vote in a third division. In IRC 52, 64% of the participants chose Quantum Racing as the champion, while in the Farr 40 class, 79% selected a Quantum boat. In the Melges 32 class, 35% named a Quantum team.
So what to make of this? “This is a huge change in thinking,” says Ed Reynolds. “In 2008 a Seahorse writer told me, ‘When I see a boat with anything other than North Sails, I have a hard time taking them seriously.’ I think this shows a very strong shift in thinking over the last few years.”
Not a scientific study by any stretch...but what comes through is clear: The public’s perception is changing. Quantum programs are worth betting on. Now that’s worth something!
