Off-the-beach Nationals

More than 50 classes hold their National Championships every year. Included in this review are 23 classes. If your class missed out, further reports will be carried in the next issue. Please email rogermcmillan@yaffa.com.au for details.

International Flavour to 420 Nationals

The 42nd Australian 420 Championships, held at Largs Bay S.C. in Adelaide, took on an International flavour, with entrants from Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong and New Zealand.  With entrants from all Australian States, the 54 boat fleet enjoyed great competition over the full 12 race series.

The overseas boats certainly made their presence felt with Justin Liu and Sherman Chang from Singapore, defending the title they won last year in Perth, but certainly had to fight a lot harder to win this series. Top Australians in the Open Series were Matt Jerwood and Patrick Voss from WA, who became the Australian Champions, after finishing runner up last year, and 1st male Youths.

Lucy Shephard & Amelia Catt (Tas), won the Australian Women’s Championship from Griselda Khng & Celia Low (Singapore).  First Female Youth were Carrie Smith and Ella Clark (WA) on a countback from Sasha Ryan and Jaime Ryan (Qld).  WA won the best State Trophy from SA.

A full range of breezes made for a very fair series and the typical Largs Bay sea breezes gave some exciting and spectacular racing.  Overseas boats filled seven of the first 13 places and lifted the level of the racing greatly. Next Nationals will be in NSW at a venue still to be confirmed.

12ft Skiff Interdominions

Nick Press and Brad Yabsley (Dimension Polyant) won the 50th Interdominons on Auckland harbour, breaking a 20 year Aussie drought on New Zealand waters in the class.

The win was hard fought with Dimension Polyant trailing Tim Bartlett and Adam Millar (Frankenskiff NZ) leading into the final race. A nail-biting third place to Dimension Polyant, and sixth to Frankenskiff, handed the overall victory to the Australians by the narrowest of margins.

Current Australian champions Murray Press and Ben Gemmell (Gemmell Sails) and 2009 Interdominon champion Brett Hobson and Alex Johnson (Garde) produced some strong results but the Australian team was not able to hang on to the John Brooke teams trophy with New Zealand taking a convincing win. The Australian team is looking forward to winning back the trophy on home waters in 2011, when the regatta will be held by Lane Cove 12ft skiff sailing club.

The regatta was also a fantastic social event, with plenty of off water functions celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Interdominion Regatta. With a who’s who of past and present 12ft Skiff sailors (people such as Bruce Farr, John Winning and Rob Brown making appearances), getting together for a dinner on the Thursday night.

13ft Skiff

The 13ft Skiff Australian Championships were held at Belmont 16ft Sailing Club in conjunction with the 16ft Skiff Australian Championships from 2 January to 9 January 2010.  All seven heats were sailed in breezes not exceeding 17 knots so it made for some very interesting all round sailing.  The location was fantastic with the 13’s starting off the same start line as the 16ft Skiffs, 10 minutes afterwards, and sailing to the same first windward mark as the 16s and then off to their own port-hand trapezoid course.

The results were dominated by Northside Sailing School skippered by Scott Cotton and Rob Size from Middle Harbour 16ft Skiff Club.  They won every heat except for one and their time on the water practising in the lead up to the Nationals just shows the importance of time together as a team.  Scott’s previous results in the Flying Eleven class held him in good stead against the second and third spots who were also filled by previous Flying Eleven sailors who had achieved first and second National results in that class.

Olivia Price and Kieran Searle sailing MBH 2 from Manly 16ft Skiff Club were second overall in the series after winning one heat and leading in others and either sailing the wrong course or falling overboard.   Third overall was Tyres and More sailed by Matt Stenta and Josh McKnight from Manly 16ft Skiff Club.

16ft Skiffs

Light to medium winds prevailed in the 2009-10 Australian 16ft Skiff Championships held on Belmont Bay, Lake Macquarie, during the week 2 to 9 January.

With 60 entries, the series of seven races featured six different race winners, making for one of the closest in many years. Going into the final race, the winner of the series was known, but any one of eight other skiffs was still vying for the runner-up position.

Although disqualified in the final race, the overall winner of the series was Fluid Building sailed by Clint Bowen, Anthony King and Brent Dennis from the Manly Club.  Clint previously won the Championship in the 2005-06 season.  Finishing on 22 points with placings of 2-5-7-1-4-3-OCS, consistent sailing was the secret to their success.  Runner up in the series was Belmont boat Mitre 10 Kurri Kurri sailed by Kieran Humphries, David Johnson and Andrew Stone.  They finished on 30 points with placings of 8-10-1-2-6-19-3.  Kieran is a young up and coming skipper with a very promising future.  Third place went to OAS sailed by Danny Anderson, Murray Atkins and Sean Harrison.  They finished on 33 points with placings of 11-12-3-17-2-4-1.  Danny had previously won the Championship back in 1996/97, but could not find the consistency he needed to win on his home waters.

Defending champion, James Dorron in Fire Stopping from the Manly Club, was going for his third straight title, but also struggled to find consistent form in the light conditions and could only manage 7th overall.

– Michael McMahon

18ft Skiff

Defending champion crew Seve Jarvin, Tom Clout and Sam Newton, hit form to retain their Australian championship with the well-campaigned Gotta Love it 7. They beat their early-season nemesis Thurlow Fisher Lawyers (Michael Coxon, Aaron Links and Trent Barnabas), winner of the NSW championship, on a placings countback after both teams ended the SP HighModulus-sponsored five-race series tied on points.

Michael Coxon, skipper of the 2006 and 2007 JJ Giltinan international championship winners, returned to top form after he missed the 2008-09 season to take an overseas sailing sabbatical. Third was the season’s big improver Smeg, skippered by the Interdominion skiff champion Nick Press, ahead of former JJ Giltinan international champion John Harris’ Rag & Famish Hotel.

Gotta Love it 7 went into the last race with a one-point lead over Thurlow Fisher Lawyers. In a classic 12-15 knot ENE breeze on Sydney Harbour, Thurlow Fisher Lawyers won the start and established a 25 second lead over Gotta Love it 7. With a long break to the rest of the fleet, 7 sailed conservatively to hold the second place needed to take the title.

– Bob Ross

Manly Juniors

Fifty-five Manly Juniors contested the championship at Pittwater with Avalon Sailing Club hosting the event. The racing was conducted in light and variable breezes.

Despite taking out the championship, Nick Connor and Fergus Stabback didn’t have it all their own way during the regatta. Strong performances from Ryan Wilmot and Simon Murnaghan (Manly 16’s) and Jim Colley with brother Tom (ASC) saw the final result  go right to the wire.

The final day presented with a light sou’easter and a fine mist rain.  Following a 50% point penalty early in the regatta Nick needed to finish the last race ninth or better if Ryan should win the final encounter. At the first rounding of the top mark Ryan was in front with Nick in a mid 20’s position. With some sensational light wind sailing Nick was able to claw his way back into sixth at the finish. Jim Colley pulled off a great last work to catch Ryan right on the line and this was sufficient to allow Bullet into equal second place overall. A count back separated these two fine sailors and Bullet, was awarded second place overall with 2780 taking out third in the Championship.

Dragons

This year’s Prince Philip Cup attracted an excellent fleet of 29 boats, including International Dragon Association president Rob Campbell, who helmed Robert Alpe’s boat Indulgence.   The Russians, Mikhail Muratov and his wife Olga White, who competed in Sydney last year, also contested the regatta.

In a hard-fought seven race series,  local Perth skipper Richard Lynn, helming Puff, held on to a slender lead to win the prestigious trophy,  finishing third in the last race to  beat Olga White, steering Murka II, by 4.7 points under the old Olympic scoring system still used for this event.

Puff had a scorecard of 1-1-4-4-4-2-3 to finish with a net 24.7 points, Murka II’s score was 3-8-5-3-1-1-4 for 29.4 points, while Whim recorded a series of 12-7-1-1-11-5-2 for 43 points.  Another WA boat, Red Baron, skippered by Tony Lynn, placed fifth on 61.4 points while in sixth place was the Sydney boat Indulgence, helmed by IDA president Rob Campbell, on 72.4 points.

Last year’s Prince Philip Cup winner, Nick Rogers, did not compete in Perth but plans to contest the Pre-Worlds and the Worlds in 2010.  He is a former World champion in the International Dragon class.

Flying 11

The F11s had a spellbinding 2010 nationals hosted by the oldest yacht club in Australia, Tamar YC at Beauty Point, Tasmania. The Tamar produced everything imaginable – tranquility, storms, glass-outs, raging rivers, fast currents, eddies, 3m tides and breeze from everywhere, testing the seventy-one boat fleet.

The regatta had it all too, five-star organisation and hospitality, controversy with ten boats black flagged in Black Monday’s race 1, Big Tuesday’s river swell of 1m in race 2, When Will It End Wednesday’s seven hours on water until 7pm after races 3 and 4,  Bagdad Friday’s races 5 and 6 with RO Hugh “Bagdad Bob” Leicester ending up short on cartridges for two white-hot shotguns on board the committee vessel firing 216 in total and six separate winners over seven races.

Bitter Sweet Saturday re-shuffled the leaders with a nail-biting finish determining the new National F11 Champions. Lethal Blonde led into the final day’s race, with Protagonist only eight points astern and Hammer Time also in range but mindful of protecting third place. When the final gun fired, Protagonist had claimed the race and the national title.

– David Price

Cherub

Alison Chapman and Rhys Mara from Lane Cove 12ft Skiff Club dominated the 2009-10 Cherub National Championships, sailed at Mounts Bay Sailing Club, Perth, in a way that no Cherub crew has done in the recent history of the class. After a shaky start to the series which included running aground and capsizing in the second race, they outshone their competitors with superior boat handling, tactical skills and mistake free sailing.

Chapman became only the second woman to win the Cherub National Championship in the class’s 47 year history, the other being Nicki Bethwaite who won the honour twice in the mid 1970s. The win was also the second in a row by the Chapman family with Alison’s brother Andrew having won the title last year.

Second overall were the Vances and third was the very consistent Cam Rule and Todd Montgomery from the host club Mounts Bay, who managed top level finishes across the full range of conditions. Rule and Montgomery also carried off the Veterans Trophy. With Chapman unable to win the Junior Championship through having won the Open Championship, the Junior Championship went to Brennan Stead and Rob Burvill from Perth Dinghy Sailing Club who finished an excellent fifth overall.  Ashley Knighton and James Walters from Belmont won the Cadet Championship for Under18 skippers.

Next year’s Cherub Nationals will be held at Largs Bay Sailing Club in Adelaide.

– Rolf Lunsmann

Couta Boats

The 2009 Couta Boat Association Barloworld Nationals were completed on the 29th and 30th of December.  The format was one day of short course racing, with the other devoted to a passage race. Three races were held on the first day.  By utilising windward/leeward courses with a downwind finish, we were able to get through the programme with minimal delay between races. The conditions were excellent. The breeze was 12 to 16 knots, moving through 200 to 170 degrees. The racing was close, producing varying results. So at the end of Day One we had enough races to constitute a series.

The passage race was to see Division 1 go to Rosebud and back, with Division 2 going to Rye. Sadly, the great conditions deserted us. The day began with a 15 knot Northeasterly that gradually petered out.  Division 1 had a general recall, with the restart under black flag due to the deteriorating conditions, with three boats disqualified BFD. The conditions meant that both fleets had their races shortened off  Blairgowrie.  Unfortunately in Division 1 only three boats finished within the half-hour limit after first boat.  So, we had a day of great sailing followed by a very ordinary one! The Couta boat fleet appeared to be sailed with a good sense of spirit and sportsmanship.

– Peter Gale

Fireball

The 2009/10 national titles were held at Port Stephens, NSW between December 27, 2009 and January 3, 2010. The event was one of the wettest regattas on record with rain every race day, but the fleet experienced some of the closest racing in memory with credit given to the 10 race short course format of the championships.

Defending titleholders Robin Inns and Joel Coultas were able to maintain their consistency throughout, winning the series with two races to spare and making this their third national championship title win in a row.

The dogfight was then on for the remaining podium positions with three crews in the hunt on the last day of racing. Nathan Stockley and Allen Blenkle won the last two races, jumping from fourth to finish second overall, while Ben Schulz and Phillip Bowley and Heather McFarlane and Chris Payne finished in third and fourth positions respectively.

The national titles is the last many will see of their boats until they are unpacked in April to contest the 2010 World Championships which will be held in Barbados. 2012 will see the return of the World Championships to Mandurah, WA.

– Joel Coultas

Herons

The 51st National Heron Championship was won by Phil Kelly and Lauren Henderson from South Australia.  The regatta was hotly contested by a fleet of 58 boats at Largs Bay Sailing Club (Adelaide) in conditions varying from thumping 25 knot sea breezes to teasing light air.  Coming into the last heat, Kelly/Henderson were three points behind NSW. father/daughter team Greg and Emma Harris.

In very light conditions, Kelly and Henderson were able to sneak away from the Harris combination and take the title.  Fraser Galloway and James Croker (Qld) were third overall, the highest finish of the six boats in the fleet carrying the newly approved Bermudan rig.

Of the top ten boats, three are stitch and glue timber, three are traditional framed timber (one of these boats was built in 1970) and four were made from the Association GRP mould.  Six of the first ten places were taken by family combinations.

Ryan Kelly completed the double for the Kelly family by taking out the junior division.

The 52nd National Heron Championship will be sailed at St Leonard’s Yacht Club, Victoria, from 14 to 21 January 2011.

– Richard Gibson

Hartley TS 16’s

Held in predominately light airs in the inner harbour off Drummoyne Sailing Club in Sydney, Ambulance, skippered by Ken Marslew with crew Nigel Short from the Kogarah Bay Sailing Club, easily took out the title with four firsts and their worst heat a fifth. Tru- Blu, skippered by Micheal Horvath from Williamstown Sailing Club was considered unbeatable prior to the championship, but had to settle for second.

Ambulance led from the start in many of the heats but another early favourite Uncle Roy from Drummoyne Sailing club skippered by Eric Parland surprised everyone on the last day getting third place overall, with Charlie Brown from Drummoyne Sailing Club skippered by Justine Tornai  finishing the series overall  in fourth place..

Association rules state that a boat cannot receive both scratch and handicap prizes so The Ambulance accepted the scratch trophy allowing Silver Fox to take the third place prize on handicap.

Cadet

The national championship of the Australian 12 Foot Cadet Dinghy was hosted by Royal Brighton Yacht Club (RBYC) in early January with the running of the 81st Stonehaven Cup regatta.

The weather was kind to the fleet for the entire regatta with a good variety of wind conditions.  Kittiwake 4, skippered by Teirnan Lacy with Matt Parolini and Maia Hester, won the Stonehaven Cup on 9 points, just three points from the brand new Cry Havoc skippered by Alex Parker with Angus Cooper and Madeline Hannington, and Tasmania One third with 21 points.

Rounding off the regatta were three races in the Open Division – open to anyone of any age who can sail a boat. This is a much anticipated event because it brings out original traditional wooden Cadets lovingly restored, to race against the rest of the Cadet fleet. Egos are on the line, with traditional rivals going head to head.  The Open Division races were comprehensively won by Nick Chapman in his beloved Kittiwake II – a freakishly fast boat built in 1964 in Tasmania.

Everyone is looking forward to the 82nd Stonehaven Cup regatta to be run by the King Island Boat Club at Grassy, King Island, from the 3rd to 10th of January, 2011.

– Ray Smith

Etchells

Masterful sailing by defending national champion John Bertrand and his fellow Olympian crew, Andrew Palfrey and Tom Slingsby, delivered a resounding victory over the 58-boat fleet in the 2010 Murphy & Nye Etchells Australian Championship.

Sailed on the stunning Lake Macquarie the championship was again a fierce battle across the fleet as they contested the nine race series.

With one race to go the Bertrand Triad team stepped away from the course to allow the battle for second and third place to continue unhampered. Sticking to the principle of consistent top ten results Bertrand did a beautiful job of keeping his racing clean. Looking forward to the Worlds in Ireland in September, Bertrand will be a strong contender for this year’s title.

Stepping up into second place, Damien King and his team on Barry craftily dropped a 21st place and then delivered consistent top ten results in the tricky conditions. Graeme Taylor with the Magie team from Mornington just could not shake King as even with two podium finishes to their account, finishing in third place.

– Tracey Johnstone

Flying Dutchman

Boats came from NSW, VIC and SA, with crews flying in from Adelaide, Perth and Mt Isa as well to compete in a highly competitive fleet at beautiful Sorrento in Victoria.

The week saw just about every wind condition possible, with drifters in big tides, and breeze up over 25 knots on occasion.

The first race of the series (the Albert Memorial Cup) was won by Robert Douglass/Douglas Rawson-Harris, and racing was tight all the way up until the last day, when the two leading boats stamped their authority on the fleet – Ian McCrossin/James Cook showing how FD’s got the Flying part in their name for upwind sailing, and Ed Cox/Peter Bevis showing how they can fly off-wind too.  McCrossin/Cook ended up taking the series with a race to spare, age and experience prevailing over youthful exuberance.

The FD continues to enjoy close racing and a great social life at all events, and has good boats available for people to come and try them out for a weekend – check out www.fd.net.au for more details.

Laser

The best downwind sailing he’d experienced for a long time…. That’s the accolade dished out by runaway winner of the 2010 Australian Laser Championship at West Beach in Adelaide, Beijing Olympian and London Olympic aspirant, Tom Slingsby.

Slingsby won the first ten races dropping a bullet and a fifth, his only lapse in light conditions in heat eleven, while the final heat was abandoned due to light air. Third Australian was James Burman and fourth, yet another NSW sailor Tom Burton.

It was a fantastic regatta for South Australian Laser Association President Sean Homan who took out the Australian Grand Masters Championship for the third successive year. His 18th  (Australian) was good enough to also defeat the entire younger Masters contingent.

In the other fleets, the Radials continued the trend towards big numbers with 95 entries – compared with 55 in the full rigs – and requiring the radial fleet to be split. Queensland’s Benjamin Franklin took out the championship on countback from Tristan Brown of Western Australia with Christopher Jones, Tasmania third.

Laura Baldwin from NSW won the Women’s Championship placing seventh Australian. Seng Leong Koh from Singapore was first international and best placed in the championship overall finishing with a net 14 points.

A fleet of 46 competitors contested the 4.7 Australian Championship with internationals taking part from France, Singapore and New Zealand. Victoria’s Lloyd Collings took out the Australian championship, seven points clear of Queensland’s Josh Franklin with Mark Spearman from Western Australia third. Ella Evans from Queensland was the first woman finishing fifth Australian. Laszlo Horvath of France finished first in the regatta 23 points clear of Collings.

– Peter Muirhead

Finn

Eighteen competitors, including guests from Great Britain, took part in the 2010 Finn Nationals - the largest fleet in recent history. Sorrento SCBC played host on the picturesque waters of southern Port Philip Bay, which are known for their shifting winds and swirling tides.

A variety of conditions prevailed over the five days of racing, proving a true test of the skill of every competitor. Youthful exuberance was not enough to topple the experience of Anthony “Nocka” Nossiter (NSW) and Nik Burfoot (NSW/NZL) who shared the spoils of the race wins. Their consistency over the range of conditions proved to be the telling factor in them taking out first and   second places respectively.

Young up and comer James Paterson (SA), who scored a podium place at each event he took part in over the summer, completed the podium. Young Oliver Twedell (Vic), the only sailor to take a race win away from Nossiter or Burfoot in the penultimate race of the series finished a respectable fourth. John Condie a solid performer got great reward for doing the events and took out the Master title.

– John Shalvey

Moth

The International Moth Australian Championship was held at South of Perth Yacht Club  from 7 to 12 January, 2010.

Bladerider and Mach2 designer Andrew McDougall (Vic) won 11 of 15 races sailing consistently faster without apparent effort. His was the only Mach2 present and he last won the Moth Nationals in 1985. He is the oldest winner in memory at age 56. Winds ranged from light to moderate. The Freemantle doctor was kind.

NSW Prowlers of Andrew Stevenson (2003 model) and Luka Damic (2008 Zero) fought out second and third, settling it in the last race. The next group were NSW Zero Prowlers of Alan Goddard and junior champion Phil Kurts plus the Queensland Bladerider X8 of Brent Pearson. These were sometimes mixed in with the next bunch. Next were Richard Heritage (WA) with a 1990s Twynan hull on Ilett foils, John Ilett WA, (Zero), and Chris Paterson WA, (X8), 10th.  Richard won the light air race.

The poor turn up of only 10 eastern staters to support the five locals made for the smallest fleet in many years. Various reasons included costs and the imminent April 2010 worlds in Dubai. South of Perth YC and their volunteers put on an excellent regatta.

– Phil Stevenson

Mirrors

The 44th International Mirror Championships were conducted by Lake Cootharaba Sailing Club in Queensland, attracting a fleet of 32 boats representing QLD, NSW, VIC, WA and TAS. Hobart teenage girls Jessie Atherton and her crew Katherine Maher in Kamikaze regained the Open Champions title they won two years ago. They won six heats in the 10 race 2 drop series, often coming from mediocre positions early in the race.

Anita Scott-Murphy and son Ben Cruse in Stealth sailed a very consistent regatta, dropping a third and fourth to take second place. Mark Phillips and son Hugh sailing in Binge Thinking, a new Dinghy Sports Mark III GRP Mirror, also sailed consistently to finish third overall. The series was held in consistent winds generally in the 10-15 knot range and featured six of the new Mark III hulls in the top ten however the first and second boats were traditional timber hulls. All of the top 10 boats used the Bermudan mast rather than the traditional Gunter rig.

The next Nationals will be held in Albany WA during December, immediately prior to the World Championships which will be an open event in January. Refer to www.mirrorworlds2011.com for details.

OK Dinghy

The 48th OK Dinghy Australian Championship was run from Sandringham Yacht Club in conjunction with the Sail Melbourne Regatta from 16 to 19 December 2009.  The series attracted 35 entries that included four juniors, and was run over seven heats.

Michael Williams from Black Rock YC made up for a missed opportunity from last year’s nationals, to emerge a most convincing winner of the event by winning all three races on the final day.  The very formidable class locals Roger and Andre Blasse filled the other podium places, with early series leader Tim Davies placing fourth.

David O’Donnell finished 15th overall to retain the junior champion trophy, while Bruce Ashton secured another win as masters champion in placing seventh overall.

Immediately following the Sail Melbourne event, boats were loaded into containers for the World Championship in Wellington, NZ in February.  Michael Williams continued his great form to finish second overall in the Worlds.

The 49th Australian Championship will be held in Hobart and run by the Derwent Sailing Squadron from 4 to 8 January 2011.

OPTI FLEET

An extreme weather system which saw temperatures soaring above 40 degrees guaranteed the 140 Optimist sailors from 11 different countries who had gathered at Adelaide Sailing Club for the Oceania and Australian Championships would be racing in predominately light winds.

The Open Fleet results were dominated by international competitors, with Singaporeans Samantha Neubronner, Jia Min Audrey Lim and Jillian Lee filling all three podium places, closely followed by sailors from Hong Kong and the USA.

Nia Jerwood (WA) was the best Australian in sixth place, and being the first sailor from an Oceania nation was declared the 2010 Oceania and Australian Champion. Nia had outstanding boat speed in these conditions and managed her regatta with a level of maturity way beyond her years, an attribute that was evident again during her impromptu speech at the presentation dinner.

The top five Australians, Nia Jerwood (WA), Lachlan Gilmour (WA), Jack Felsenthal (Vic), Douglas Campbell (WA) and Sam Blackburn (WA), will represent Australia at the next Optimist World Championships in Langkawi, Malaysia.

The Green Fleet (novice division) was won by Laurene Hautier (Fra). Eva Lorenz (Qld) was the best placed Australian in the Green Fleet and she will be one sailor to keep an eye on over the next few years.

– Warwick Crossman

Sharpie

The Australian Sharpie turned on another regatta of spectacular sailing on Hobart’s River Derwent, with 27 boats from most mainland states joining the small local fleet for the Australian championships at Sandy Bay Sailing Club.

This was the 67th annual championship for the Australian Sharpie, sometimes called the lightweight sharpie which evolved from the ‘heavyweight’, gaff-rigged 12 square metre class boat used as a three-man class at the Melbourne Olympic Games in 1956.  West Australian Rolly Tasker won the silver medal.

Mal Higgins, at 45 a veteran of Adelaide off-the-beach sailing in Sharpies, 505s and other senior classes, came from behind in the Hobart regatta to clinch victory in the final race, sailing Blur with crew of Sam Sanderson and Andrew Chisholm.

Jason Heritage, James Davis and Mark Beaumont  were second overall on 16 points. Third place went to Mal Higgins’ younger brother, Dave, sailing with Anthony Mitton and Mark Kretschmer on 19 points.

Sandy Bay Sailing Club, a small club built among the sand dunes behind Nutgrove Beach at Lower Sandy Bay, proved an ideal venue for the Championships, both for launching boats and for the social activities of this great sailing class.
