Stephen Jones has been commissioned to work alongside in-house naval architects to design the latest model in the Southerly range. This blue water cruiser is designed for a high specification, with easy handling, and can be sailed by just two people.
The tall fractional rig with self tacking jib and large mainsail provides powerful sailing performance. An asymmetric gennaker can be flown from a stainless steel bowsprit, for light wind conditions. A double headsail rig (self tacking jib and overlapping genoa) can be chosen as an option, for optimum sailing performance. As with all Southerly’s, the semi balanced twin rudders give instantly responsive steering and precise directional stability.
The mainsheet track is set across the coachroof with lines led aft to both helm positions, for easy handling, whilst keeping the cockpit free and uncluttered. The cockpit is secure and enclosed, with deep comfortable seating. A central table offers dinette facilities for guests whilst also providing a good foot brace when the yacht is heeled. Teak double seats to the pushpit provide further areas for socialising. The fold down transom door gives access to a large stowage area, ideal for a dinghy. A glass windscreen can provide protection from the elements.
The new Southerly 47 features the highly developed Swing Keel system which provides variable draught, to suit all conditions. With the keel lowered, the deep draught of 10’3’’ (3.1m) provides powerful upwind performance for serious, blue water cruising, pointing to 30 degrees. At the touch of a button, the keel can be raised to any position; mid-way to give moderate draft with directional stability - the optimum arrangement for heavy weather sailing, or completely raised for sailing in shallow waters, with 3’3’’(1m) draft, or for drying out. A fixed keel option is also available, with a draft of 8’3’’ (2.5m).
The interior space has been designed for maximum comfort and practicality with contemporary styling to create a luxurious feel throughout the yacht. The raised saloon to port takes full advantage of the panoramic views, with further seating to starboard at a lower level. The large open galley is well equipped and positioned close to the companionway. The navigation area also enjoys good views whilst being in easy communication with the cockpit. The spacious master aft cabin has been designed for supreme comfort with ensuite facilities. The large forward cabin has twin v berths with an infill panel to convert to a double. The third midships cabin has twin bunk berths which can also convert to seating, ideal for a study/office use.
A Seldon carbon rig and ‘Park Avenue’ style boom have been specified by the owner of the first yacht, together with a double headsail rig option and high performance Norlam XP sails.
The Southerly 47 is supplied with CE certification, built to EU specification and conforms to RCD category A.
