Multihull Rendezvous - fun in the sun

Entries are already sailing in for the nation’s most popular multihull regatta, the 2011 Whitsunday Multihull Rendezvous, staged from 28 August to 2 September.

Sponsored by Multihull Solutions, the Multihull Rendezvous unites serious sailors and leisurely cruisers for a week of memorable sailing and social action.

The 2010 event was a spectacular success, with the majority of participants already confirmed to return for this year’s regatta.

Organised by Abel Point yacht Club, the Multihull Rendezvous itinerary comprises an exhilarating blend of races around the turquoise waterways of the Whitsundays and fantastic social activities set against a breathtaking island backdrop.

Three racing divisions cater for multihulls across all fields: the popular Rally Division,  the OMR Racing Division and the PHS Division.

The Rendezvous’ jam-packed social calendar reminds entrants that there’s more to sailing than winding winches and setting courses.

While not on the water, participants enjoy a host of activities including spectacular bushwalks, beach BBQs, dinners at island restaurants, golf, fishing, snorkelling and beach games. Regular presentation ceremonies are held to recognise teams and individuals who set new standards in fun.

For those who don’t own a catamaran or are unable to relocate their boat for the event, the Whitsundays’ charter operators can provide a multihull to ensure no one misses out on the action.

The Rendezvous is also a unique opportunity for entrants to inspect a range of other multihulls, learn more about the capabilities of their own boat and swap stories with fellow enthusiasts.

As major sponsor, a Multihull Solutions team will also be participating in the event and will be available to give advice on all aspects of multihulls as well as leading the charge in the social arena.

Multihull Solutions director Richard Kilburn said the Rendezvous has become a key event in the nation’s sailing calendar, demonstrating the growing popularity of multihulls.

“Catamarans are the perfect boat for not only providing exceptional sailing performance but also entertaining and cruising in spacious comfort and safety,” Richard said.

“The Rendezvous brings together people from all walks of life in an unforgettable week of sailing and fun, giving them the chance to appreciate their boat with other multihull enthusiasts in a superb setting.”

The Whitsunday Multihull Rendezvous has grown significantly since its inception in the early days of the renowned Hamilton Island Race Week.  Originally run off the mainland town of Proserpine, multihulls were invited to join the racing of the Airlie Beach Race Week (formally known as Hogs Breath Race Week), which was a feeder event for the larger Hamilton Island regatta.  However, the multihull division became so popular, it was soon granted its own unique event with the Abel Point Yacht Club and Whitsunday Sailing Club taking over its coordination in subsequent years.

Now run exclusively by Abel Point Yacht Club, the Rendezvous has become the nation’s largest gathering of multihulls in a regatta-style event.
